I’ve had my share of fords over the year’s. Every single one has the horrible steering whine. Mercon v flushes. New pumps. Multiple bleed procedures. Never could seem to get the noise to go away.

Ive seen in the tech articles about using a Saginaw pump to eliminate the noise. Problem is, those pumps are impossible to find. And not cheap when you do. So I spent hours researching. And much to my surprise. I came across a company that had a fairly simple solution to this age old problem.

This company machined an adapter That bolts to your existing power steering bracket. And allows you to use the modern Saginaw TC pump. Found on the 2000s Jeep liberty’s. They advertise it for a 4.0. But I personally just installed one on my 3.0. And it worked perfectly. And it’s DEAD SILENT. All the lines mounted right up. It fits perfectly. And the instructions were super clear.

im not affiliated with them by any means. I just was very pleased with the results on my own truck. And wanted to share with you guys. Check it out!

Awesome find, so all I would need is this adapter and a '00 jeep liberty pump?

Sure looks that way. 2002-2006 Liberty with the 3.7 V6.
But only guaranteed to fit 98-00 Ranger.

A little research over at RockAuto might get your hopes up again:

1998: 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0 use Motorcraft STP55RM
1993 2.3 and 4.0 use Motorcraft STP25RM. Rockauto doesn't have Motorcraft for the 3.0. They have other brands and they look the same as the Motorcraft, but part number does not match the same brand for any of the other engines above. Who knows, for the 3.0.

The $64000 question is, "What is the difference in the Motorcraft STP55RM and STP25RM?". I don't know but they sure look the same in the pictures. I wouldn't doubt if the difference is internal only.

If I had to guess. It’s probably the pressure fitting in the pump. Which you have to swap out on the Liberty pump anyway. So I think the worst thing you would have to do. Is change the pressure line. Everything else should fit fine.

I keep hearing about the infamous Ford power steering whine but have never experienced it. I have owned Fords since I was 16, starting with a 1955 Mercury (just an upgraded Ford) that I drove in High School. I must be very lucky with driving Fords for over 60 years.

My F150 and ranger have both always whined, but work fine. Occasionally I will bleed it and transfer in some fresh synthetic atf (which is what they say to use). It will go away for a bit after this procedure, but only for a short time, then the whine comes back. I just live with it.

Good to know.by the way would u know why there so many bends and turns and up and downs on the 80s power steering system steel tubing.l?i want to clean up all those bends and twists but wasn't sure they were that way for a reason?

If it's not broken Don't Fix It!
From what I have noticed mid 80's to mid 90's were the most common Ford pick-up and vans that had the power steering whine. IF your car is whining the pump is going or the fluid level is low but for the trucks it was a very common issue with no harm being done. My Ranger whines and so did my '90 F150 with the 5.0l it's just a ford power steering pump thing for the trucks and vans.

Depending on the vehicle, those miles of steel tubing act as a fluid cooler. F series trucks in the 80's had a big wrap of it that went down to the engine cross-member and made a big loop. RBVs aren't quite like that, the amount of steel is negligible and I imagine it's bent the way it is to give the line a little bit of flex when the engine moves and to give the lines some space between each other.

So if I try to clean it up it won't affect much if anything at all if I do it right?
