I lived in Ca for 26 years. The DMV there has always been a nightmare. It makes my current state, Oklahoma, seem tame in comparison. I even have 30 days after tags are due with no penalties here. And way cheap compared to CA. My 98 Ranger is under $20.00. My 04 Lightning was like $25.00. And no smog or safety inspections. Run what you brung! Heaven!

The OP is in Burbank. Yuck! That place was nasty back when I left CA in 2002. In CA there is no excuses. Pay it on time or the penalties just go up and up and up, to the moon and beyond. There's no, "I haven't driven it in five years". Get out your wallet and pay up. That's all folks.

I know, you see Oklahoma and you think Flyover Country. And what's wrong with that. It's a red state, every county here voted Trump in 2016. Bet it happens again this year. You can't believe what a slice of heaven Oklahoma is after living in CA for 26 years! We can even carry firearms with no permit. Knives? Anything goes. I collect blades. Have more than I know what to do with. I carry two matched Spyderco Militarys and a Kimber Grand Raptor every day, one left hand, the other right and a Kimber Grand Raptor in .45ACP. Switchblades are legal here. Bowie knives. You name it, you can carry it.

I'll never step foot in CA again in this lifetime. There's no amount of money!
How's the weather? I have been looking for somewhere to move once my grandparents are gone.

Well, it's cold in the winter and hot/humid in the summer. It's called seasons. We get a goodly amount of rain every year, but that's a good thing. Tornadoes, I haven't had any run ins with them in the 18 years I've lived here. Unlike hurricanes, which can affect an entire state, or earthquakes which can affect a large part of a state, tornadoes generally are short lived events that don't cover a large swath of territory. I'm not moving, the positives outweigh the negatives.

I still don't understand "back fees". If I should decide not to register a vehicle this year and register it next year, I pay for one year's registration. California charges you for the registration you didn't get? I guess I'm a dumb Yankee, that sounds wrong to me- just like having to pay the state a tax because you bought a new car and stimulated the local economy.

That's exactly right. CA doesn't care if you didn't drive the vehicle for a year. You own, you pay them, even if it's sittin with the engine out. There was some CA politician, who said something to the effect, "California is a great place to live, it costs a lot to live in a great place". Probably not the exact words, I don't recall who said them any more. I thought it was bs back then, and no, it's not really the great place it was in the 70's when my parents first moved there from NJ.

I suspect it's so expensive because California spends so much of the money they collect from tax payers on people who don't pay taxes....
I thought governments collected taxes from the citizens to pay for things like police, schools, roads, snow removal, etc that were needed by the tax payers.

Pennslyvania and Virgina have the same hot/humid and cold winters. We already have our share of liberals down here in Va. We are just afraid we are going to get even more from up North. Hopefully the people that do get out are not the radical liberals. They don't seem to realize their great ideas are what is causing their problems. They move and then try their ideas all over again.

You have to keep the registration renewed ever year, otherwise they fine you. The only way around it is to register it as "non op" (no operable) . That's puts a hold on things, but you cant drive the vehicle legally on public roads like that. So lets say your tags are expired and you dont renew them for a few years. The next time its registered, all the back renewal fees that weren't paid get tacked on, along with some late fees, Unless you registered it non op the whole time.

Yes its wrong. There's ways we survive (loop holes, grey areas etc).

At least trailers are easy to register, they get permanent tags.

Sounds tempting. I like my hot humid summers, and my cold winters.

Now I just have to talk the wife into it.

I am concerned about people dismissing certain things as "political". I consider some subjects more important than just a political debate or game of some sort. They are threatening my way of life.

I suspect it is because some of these issues (like back DMV fees) while apolitical in and of themselves their use is generally tied exclusively to one party or the other.

Someone points out that X disagreeable policy is used in Y location traditionally leaning towards Z party, but not in B location which usually elects members of the other party, and BAM, now it just got political.

Damn I hate political debates.
If you absolutely hate the policies and screwed up laws in the state you live in change the way you vote. Don't move to a more friendly state and vote for the same unfriendly policies that exist in the state you came from.
