Torsen is what I wanted.... try getting one. Tired of them not returning calls or emails.

If thats how they treat their inquiries, I'd hate to see their customer service....

Also, 2011 truck, so AFAIK, a expo axle swap isn't possible due to wheel sensors. Sorta stuck with this lump.
Maybe fwd em one of Dirtmans dong pics, that oughta get their attn....

Sounds like your options are stick w/ that powertrax and grind rocks, or get an auburn and do gear oil changes. Or just weld the spider gears together :D

Honestly I think for that usage, you wouldn't even hafta change the gear oil much on the auburn...Its not that bad unless your hammering the gas and/or racking up miles. Also limited slip might be better than a full locker for snow use. The auburn is really good at giving in turns. +1 Walt.

Give 'yer balls a tug. Fight me.
This is what sold me. Instant pass on the limited slip in the parts truck.

I asked dad. His 78 2500 ram was cup and cone. Always thought it was posi. Hm.

Oh well.

Limited slip 8.8 28 spline for sale. Axles and stuff too. I just want the 4.10s.

What I was taught, which may be correct or not: and least to most gnarliest....

An open diff sends power to the tire with the LEAST amount of traction. Makes no sense to gearheads, but does provide a smooth ride.

Limited slip/Posi is the same thing, but perhaps different approaches.....
They do the opposite of an open diff, and send most, but not all power to the tire that has the MOST traction, hence the "limited" slip (and both tires spin)

A locker fully locks both axles under power, and unlocks when coasting, making it somewhat possible to still turn, as long as your off the gas all the way around it, or willing to countersteer.

A spool fully locks both axles full time. making turns is not pretty.

I feel like its the posi/limited slips that have the most varying methods of skinning a cat. and lockers after that

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
"Posi" is a limited slip but limited slips aren't necessarily "Posi's", that's Chevy's trademarked name for their clutch type limited slip- you know, the rear end they broke so many times before they replaced it with a Ford 9 inch. To make a clutch type diff send power to a wheel with no traction you just have to apply a couple clicks of parking brake, once the wheel has a little resistance it will get power and get you out of the mud hole or snow bank. My Auburn Pro is too aggressive for a lot of conditions, a Traction Lok has 20-40 ft/lbs of breakaway torque, the Pro has 140 ft/lbs. That means, if you jack up one wheel and put a torque wrench on it, it takes that much to rotate the wheel. 140 works great for drag racing but it's treacherous when driving in the rain and will drag one tire when turning on dirt. If you get an standard Auburn or a clutch type you'll be happier unless all your driving is off road.

My ranger came stock w/8.8" 3.73 w/ trac lok ...just about perfect for me, If I do anything it would be maybe vented diff cover and some trussing. I don't even mind the drum brakes! (for now lol)

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Your axle already has a vent.

I imagine he meant finned :)

I'm not so sure how much love I'd be putting in that 40 year old video, I didn't know they were made by Eaton but all my chevy truck friends call them "gov lock" probably because the 100rpm differential between wheels is from a mechanical governor... Anywho, apparently they have a limited life span and just stop working after a while...

I reshimmed the limited slip in my '00 Explorer (and the one in the '91 Explorer I had) and it responds very nicely, Ford in all their wisdom stacked the shims steel on steel and friction on friction and left room for another disc on each side... when you stack them in a logical fashion as tight as you can they work much better... 40k miles after I put it together (with junkyard parts) it still puts power to both rear wheels and will whip the heavy pig sideways if you do it right...

was that a pain in the ass to do? Or not so bad once you got the unit out on a bench? Special tools required?
