Hi,

I've currently got a CEL on my 2011 Sport, and the code is "DTC #1: 0x0430 (P0430) [Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)] Status: 0xFF (Actively Failing)"

it's been intermittent for a while, now it's permanent and I can hear rattling at idle so I know the catalyst substrate has cracked. I just can't find whether Bank 2 is driver side or passenger side. I've tried tapping on the cats but with steel piping a rattle can sound like it's coming from anywhere. One side is a good bit more expensive than the other so I'd like to be sure before I drop $$ on a replacement.

Thanks

Had to get a new Y-pipe with cats for my Sport Trac to pass emissions last year, it was pricey as hell.

Ford labels "V" engines as Bank 1 passenger side, Bank 2 drivers side
(4cyl or I6 just have Bank 1)

O2 sensors are Sensor 1 Upstream(next to exhaust manifold), Sensor 2 Downstream(after Cats)

So for example
B1S1, bank1 sensor1 would be passenger side upstream O2
B2S1 would be drivers side upstream O2

B1S2 would be passenger side downstream O2, this is usually the only downstream O2

But IF you have a Dual exhaust, then you would also have a B2S2, bank 2 sensor2, drivers side downstream O2

P0430 would mean that the Cat converter(s) are not burning up the exhaust like it/they should
The computer compares sensor 1 and sensor 2 on the same bank, sensor 1 should run between .3-.6volts, sensor 2 should run at .7-.8volts
The computer will send a Rich and then Lean mix to test sensor 1, and this also tests if sensor 2 responds

Ranger O2s are all the same, up or downstream, and narrow band, O2s voltage range is .1-.9volts
O2s see Oxygen, not fuel, .1v is high oxygen, .9 is low oxygen
When Cats burn up exhaust they use up most of the oxygen, so downstream O2 should see low oxygen, which is .7-.8volts
If Cat is not work well then voltage gets lower, BUT ALSO, if there is an exhaust leak, that lets IN oxygen, so voltage also drops, so false low voltage

This could be an O2 sensor issue, you could swap sensor 2's and see if trouble code moves to bank 1
If not then Cat(s) on bank 2 are the problem(or exhaust leak), if code moves to Bank 1 then replace that O2

it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
It's next to bank 1.

When my driver’s side cat took a dump on my 2011, I bought a Walker brand replacement from RockAuto. It was a heck of a lot cheaper than the OEM cat and has been working fine for about 3 years now.

I’m not saying the cat is the problem but if it is, one can be had for less than the $600 OEM part price.

oh, I'm sure it's the catalyst; they were junk on these trucks and fail all the time. The bank 1 cat has already been replaced, but at least that one failed within the federal emissions warranty. I'm not worried about getting a "CARB-legal" replacement or any of that stuff, I just want the check engine light off. and if the catalyst element is cracked it can't be good for exhaust flow.

Thats news to me. Ive seen plenty of 98-11 rangers with over 200,000 miles on the original cats/exhaust system.
