So I have a 83 Ford Ranger and I went to start it after 4-5 days of it sitting and it was clicking so I thought it was a bad solenoid. I replaced that and went to start it but my battery was dead so I jump started it and right when I hooked up both of the jumper cablesthe engine started to turn over like I was trying to start it even though the keys weren’t even in the ignition. I instantly unhooked it tried again and it started getting a charge to the battery without trying to start the truck I went to start it after a little and the truck fired up but sounded awful so I took the key out and once again it was sounding like it was trying to crank it over so I had to run out and unhook the jumper cables. Any help on to what is going on would be much appreciated.

Sounds like the new starter relay is stuck... try smacking it with a screw driver handle.

Or... you hooked something up wrong.

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
Post a pic of your solenoid, so we can see how you wired it.

I hooked it up exactly how I took it apart and it ran fine when I had it like that before but I’ll try smacking it to get it unstuck could the relay just be faulty ?
