Is it possible to use a 3.4l v8 from a 1997 taurus and can i still keep a manual transmission, or would i have to swap it over to an automatic?

I thought about this swap too. I think the hardest part of your quest, would be finding a RWD transmission to fit the SHO motor. You might want to find a Taurus or even an SHO forum to see if they have figured out the tranny part of it. As long as you have the motor, computer and wires, you should be good, but the whole car would be better.

No, no Ranger trans will bolt to it, and I doubt there is a rear wheel drive transmission that will

The 3.2l V6 SHO did use Ranger 3.0l Vulcan pattern but NOT the 3.4l V8 SHO, it used the Duratec V6 pattern

For a 2wd option how about the Mustang 3.7 6 speed trans?

No, the 3.7l cyclone engines use their own bolt pattern doesn't matchup with any other engine pattern.....yet
And I think the RWD and FWD are also different on these, lol

Maybe, they did use the Jaguar AJ-V6 engine which "supposedly" was a Duratec V6 pattern, but never tried one, lol
Also Lincoln LS with a manual transmission(which was an option) may be few and far between

adsm08 has mentioned the LS drivetrain before as a possible option for duratec into a ranger. Said the same about probability of finding one as a donor. But if you were just ordering parts off of a list, you could maybe do it.

"Duratec" is a generic Ford name, like Duratorq for the diesels, it doesn't denote bell housing patterns specifically

Did "Duratec" engines come in Rangers? What is it generic for? Is it different than Zetec? What ever happen to Zetec? I have so many questions now

The Duratec 2.3 was offered in Rangers for the last several years of production (maybe ten years). It came as a replacement for the 2.5 Lima.

Maybe @adsm08 help me remember what the convo was about. But the Lincoln LS was about the only thing that had the option of a rwd tranny that we were talking about.
