Hello, so I rolled my 4x4 ranger and bought another 2wd truck to swap cabs. I just so happened to also be a 94 4.0 manual. The cab swallowed is done and I have an extra engine from the 2wd truck. I noticed that there is a cam position sensor in the back where a distributor would go on the 2wd engine. When the cab was off my 4x4 chassis I noticed that it did not have this sensor, just a cover for the hole.

The 4x4 truck with no cam sensor on the back is a 1994 model year mfg in late '93, also fed emissions, no EGR.

The 2wd truck with the sensor is a 1994 model year mfg in mid '94, it has CA emissions, w/ EGR.

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two engines. I figure the block is the same and that is all that will make it into the final build but I am curious to know why my 4x4 truck didn't come with this sensor.

Just different emissions standards between the federal government (49 state standard) and California standards at the time. The cam sensor allows for slightly better fuel management and the EGR reduces NOX emissions. If you use the computer off the 4x4 just block off the EGR and cam sensor holes. The engines are otherwise identical.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Maybe it's some new fad diet? :dunno:

You can't eat car parts here in the northeast... too salty.

You have to let them sit on water for a while to de-brine. Kinda like letting your live clams sit in a bucket of salt water for a few hours so they can eject any sand before you make the chowdah.

Just so you know the Oil Pump Drive is under that "plug" on the top back of your engine, so important

The Cam sensor on the 1994 Calif engine also has oil pump drive on the bottom

You can swap these around if you want to use the other 4.0l in your Ranger

The Cam sensors were added for sequential fuel injection which has better emissions than the Batch Fire injection previously used
1995 and up 4.0l OHV and 4.0l SOHC all have Cam sensors, and EGR systems to meet emissions standards

Ok, thats cool. I would have thought it was all multi port efi until the 2000s.

It is. It's just varying levels of precision in the control system.

So could I reprogram the computer without the cam Sensor to run with it or is the pin missing? I'm gonna get a TWEECER for this.

Next time you are in the engine bay look at the injectors, all will have a Red wire, then look to see if the other wire color is the same on 2 of the injectors, if so its Batch fire, on a V6 that means 3 injectors open at the same time, and computer alternates, so there are just 2 injectors grounds running back to computer

Sequential requires separate ground wire for each injector, so 6 different color wires back to computer

The computer needs Cam sensor firmware and software to use that signal
And if its batch fire now it also needs firmware and software along with 4 more wires to injectors

It worked out that I am using the crank out of the CA engine and the block and intakes from the FED engine. Check my other posts if you want more details.
