So, took delivery on the Ranger at the end of Aug (labor day savings events happening), and the truck has 5900 miles on it currently--I have been using the "Auto start/stop" feature most of the time--Cancelling when needed to prevent repeated start/stops-- Today, jumped it to go to the post office-truck would not turn over to start--Repeated attempts produced only a solid "click", then suddenly started--Drove to destination (having cancelled the Auto start feature), shutdown, now at full temp, and problem continued--took it straight to Ford, to at least verify the issue/open a work order--The guys were able to diagnose/confirm the issue-Ordered a replacement starter! Being a previous Ford Tech, I had the same concerns as many others here, on "starter longevity" !! So, will now be on Starter #2 now, and test continues!!!:p And it was "very much appreciated", that the Ford guys helped out, with no delays!!!

Auto stop/start is required to meet emissions "at idle", so not going to go away any time soon

Yes, starter motors will be replaced more often

Yeah thats why I don't buy anything newer than a 14. Besides these fords wont be around too long to complain about 20 year old car and truck problems.

We replaced a rear diff in a 2016 escape and it already has rust holes starting in the welds of the subframe. Stock up on late model cars and trucks while you can.

I wonder what the environmental impact is of all the worn parts? New parts manufacturing environmental impact, garages needing to use energy to replace "green" parts, etc...

Worst case scenario for the future, Offenhauser is still around.

They are, but few people rebuild or repair anything for themselves. So they will be shipped all across the world where they can be rebuilt at some factory, likely in China, and then shipped back again. Not quite so green...

It's got a button to push to disable the Auto Start/Stop....
Which then leaves you with a very overbuilt starter that should last a long long time...

I predict that starters will eventually be phased out altogether.

Ford is already using high-tension belts and using the alternator as a starter-generator in the F-150 for the start/stop feature.

It still has a regular starter that is used when you hit the key, but the alternator is used for the auto stop/start feature. I think that in a few more years, once that system has been proven and had the kinks worked out that we will see starters go away and starter-generators make a comeback.

Not sure a starter generator would solve anything, Models T's used them in 1919

But one good thing, or bad thing, would be if generator fails battery runs down and you have a no start either way, lol
And no Jump starting

Also twice the price to replace it, well probably 3 times the price at least

Why no jump starting? Why would the location of the starter have anything to do with jump starting?

I think it a putting your eggs in one basket thing. If the alternator goes bad (bad rotor/fields or brushes) and the battery runs down it won’t work as a starter to jump.

Usually it is the regulator that dies on an alternator... not sure how this would figure into a alternator/starter hybrid... my head says probably non issue but my gut says this is out of my league.
