You said it yourself, "the 3.0 was used in a lot of stuff" where as the 2.9 was only used in the ranger.... Seems like they were scared to use it in anything else. Untapped potential doesn't matter, you can put a turbo on anything if you really wanted to. Once I get my truck fixed I will be ready to spank any 2.9 out there (if there is one running around here) haha.
The euro 2.9s were matching the US 4.0 for power. Without a turbo. The 2.9 wasnt as "civilized" as the 3.0, which is another reason it was killed. The 3.0 lost out to a frickin 4 cylinder.
Ok now that's just ridiculous... they are both equally stupid.

After the typical 2.9 loses a few cylinders they kinda sound the same.

The 2.9's all have potential for lots of tapping.
1- A 2.9 on 4 cylinders still will eat a 3.0 1st-3rd gear.

2- Its a good thing 2.9s tick...why? So you can hear them coming and know your ass is just about to be handed to you. Its psycological warfare at its finest.

I guess. If you're into hearing about the one some toothless old party girl had back in the day... They definitely pull in the geriatric trim.

I doubt that.... Have you ever driven a 3.0? It's ok that the 3.0 got replaced by a 4 cyl too because it has more power than the 3.0 and the 2.9. They still ran that 3.0 for 17 years in production and why would they do that if it was no good? I say go find someone with a 3.0 and race them and see how your old tired 2.9 does against a 3.0. The only benefit the 2.9 has is its rpm's. The 3.0 is best at 3500-4500 rpms. Mine doesn't like taking off but once it gets above 20 mph it gets hauling ass. That's with bigger tires too so if I put on some little 14's I bet it would take off like a 100 mile an hour dragster!

I had a buddy with one of these, it was white. It was the biggest POS I have ever sat it. stupid hatch weighed a metric ton and no one ever mistook it for a mustang. I think it had a turbo, but it was so sluggish I cant remember.
