87 Ranger factory AM/FM Cassette.

Why does the backlight for the LCD display quit working when its cold out?

It happend the other day and came on about halfway to work (10 mins or so)

This morning its not working at all.

Is it the bulb? I just replaced that back around may. Or somethin else?

No idea. Mine came with a 1990s aftermarket unit that didn't work. I threw a $19 Dual back in its place with Bluetooth. It randomly freezes up and I have to pull the fuse to reboot it. It's getting replaced.

Best advice would be to do the same. Blaupunkt 6x9 speakers fit the back, and 4-5" fit the front as long as you make an adapter. Did my whole system for under $100. Was worth it.

I never mess with factory audio, though. Its one of the areas Detroit always cheaps out unless you pay for a marginal upgrade.

I have a pet peeve about aftermarket head units. Espicially in older vehicles. Stupid i know but it aggravates me looking at the dash and seeing a modern radio in a vintage dash.

Maybe ill just spend the money for a refurb original. I do have a few speakers i wanna replace though at some point.

I have that same POS dual receiver too and it will freeze up on me too. Seems like if I try to change between modes it just locks up. It has a reset button on the front but it wont officially reset and turn back on until you turn off the engine. It's getting replaced as well. I got a double DIN I am going to stuff in there if I ever get time to do it. I'd rather have a good working newer radio than one that has poor sound and bad display.... It's hard to find an ALL ORIGINAL old car/truck anymore. Most have LED dashes and LS swaps from what I see. I'm sure there's something on your truck that isn't from the 80's or 90's so what's the difference?

I had a radio with a bad display that I tried to open up and fix it myself, it did not end well. They just get old. Internal connections start cracking and coming apart or they get corrosion in them. They wear out like any other part. If you've checked all the external stuff (fuses and harness) theres not much else you can do except find another one from my experience.

There is probably a loose solder joint on the circuit for the light, and when it is cold things contract and it looses contact. Things heat up, stuff expands enough, and it starts working.

I don't get why everyone likes original radios.... they suck quite a bit especially after you replace it and you hear the sound difference. Let alone the capabilities new radios have like Bluetooth and USB ports.

It is probably mostly a looks thing. While I enjoy them, the CD player and USB/AUX jacks on my Sony head units do look a bit out of place in my late 80s/early 90s cars. Something of an anachronism.

But I like anachronism. One of my favorite games to play when watching TV is "Spot the out of place car". My favorite is the Expedition/F150 in the opening credits of That 70's Show.

There was/is a company that will put in new guts in an old radio housing. Its been a few years and don't remember specifics.

In the movie Dazed and Confused, there's a red Bronco II in the background.
