I agree that unless your in a class 8 truck, you use an automatic for towing. I was just looking for an excuse to show the pics of the inside of that destroyed converter.

Our fleet at work has 200+ trucks over 26k pounds (up to 105k that needs special permits to go down the road.) 4 of them are manual, the rest are Allison autos.

Allisons are a leauge of their own though.

What about a C6 vs a T18?
An A4LD vs a TK5?
An 5R55E vs a M5OD.
AOD vs M5OD?
E4OD vs ZF?

Manuals dont have to worry about heat, the number one killer of auto trannys. Clutches are much cheaper then clutch packs, and i know that manual is going to shift everytime, when, and how i want it to.

Manuals were superior to automatics untill the last 10 years when they were tottally abandoned. Back in 04, i would trust a M5OD with 5 or 6k before i trusted a glorified A4LD with an extra gear.

You guys crack me up :)

Yes, manual trans is far more reliable, IMO, than any automatic

But automatic has stronger gears for towing more weight

Stronger as is more power to the ground? Or stronger as in "stronger"?

Neither are true, really. Not untill the past few years.

They have always been stronger with planetary gears, i.e. the "power" that can be applied to the transfer point from engine to output shaft
That power is transferred through the gear teeth that are in contact at that time, and planetary gears just have more surface area in contact

Weak point in a manual trans is the limited contact between selected gears, 2 or 3 teeth, its just math, the Dog gear/clutch might be less but I think its the gears themselves, but not an engineer

Any "force/power" is divided by surface area

Then why is the failure rate among automatics vastly higher then with manuals?

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

Lack of proper maintenance and overheating, most likely. Look at what components fail in the autos. Is it the gears? Or is it clutch packs, valve assemblies (from dirty, overheated oil), torque converters or something else. Automatics are more complicated and must be properly maintained.

That's a reliability issue not a strength issue

Automatics have way more ways to fail than a manual trans, so by default a manual trans will be more reliable
In automatics its usually not the planetary gears that fail, strip, but in manuals, gears are the usual problem, but just because thats pretty much all there is besides the bearings, lol

Automatics became the "standard transmission" simply because majority of buyers wanted automatics and complained about paying extra for it.
As a car maker you can't make everyone happy, that the FIRST RULE, lol, second rule is try to make the most people happy, so we get automatics as standard and manuals as the pay extra option

But in fairness automatics have become pretty reliable for what they are, but they will always have a higher problem rate than a manual, because of what they are
And if you buy used vehicles then an automatic can be a big problem because you won't know if it was serviced correctly or at all
