This is the head of a bolt.
If it has right-hand threads, you loosen it by turning it counterclockwise when facing the head. That is the direction indicated by the arrows in the next picture. It is opposite of the wAy the hands move on a clock. Doesn't matter where the bolts is or what direction you are looking.
