Any benefit to installing a 180 degree thermostat?

Hey!.... No, that won't work. The way things have been going lately, I'd inadvertently manage to blow up my Ranger.
Liquid N2 is -321 degrees F
A 2.9 runs at 192 degrees F
That's a 513 degree F difference in intake vs. engine temperatures

Meaning a 102.6% increase in HP.

My math is flawless. Your move.

Asking for a video of a Ranger being blown up, while posting on a Ranger forum :shok:.... THAT should definitely get you on "the list".
Nah. I'll watch the 3.0 Taurus detonate all day.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

I just like exciting videos of stuff getting destroyed. "The list" has to do with bashing 2.9l engines in Rangers. I really have nothing against the 2.9 and my understanding is that it performs better than my 3.0l but requires more maintenance. But I have already earned my place on the list. So I'm good.

Poke fun at me if you like. It's cool with me. Hey man, I'd bet I've been modifying bikes and cages for longer than most of you have been alive. Like using 20W-50 in my vehicles, it's something I've done forever. Same with changing thermostats. I don't do it just to do it. Typically do it when the vehicle needs a new one, then I just go ahead and opt for one step cooler. Not worried about the performance, the Ranger is pretty much a slug anyways. When I'm throwing at around a set of curves, I'm shifting it manually to keep the engine singing at a high rpm. Works great. My Lightning, wouldn't notice a small increase in any event. I'm already running more boost than stock through mucho modified intake and exhaust and tuned via handheld SCT X-4. .

Some of y'all say running 20W-50 is BAD! Been doing it since the late 70's, never hurt one of my vehicles, including the Ranger. Y'all say putting a colder thermostat in is BAD! Never hurt a thing in any of my vehicles, including the Ranger.

So I'll just keep doing what works for me, thank you very much. Have a nice night! I'm on break at work, gotta get back to it.

How many times do I have to say, the temperature gauge needles on both my Lightning and Ranger point considerably lower than they did before. That's why.
And... that's accomplishing what exactly?

I've always used a colder thermostat since the late 70's myself. And I do have a 180° stat in my 2.9. And I've been thinking about going back to 20w-50 in my 2.9 because the bottom end has 300K+ miles on it. And I either have to get rid of the STX stripes that are still on the cab (the bed was swapped, so no stripes there), or paint some on the bed :). And doing the liquid nitrogen lower intake is dependent upon me finding a suitable test pilot/driver.

I recently installed a 180 thermostat in my 5.0 Ranger. I already had it apart anyway, and since the underhood temps seemed a little high to me, I thought the 180 thermostat couldn't hurt. I measured the top of the aftermarket aluminum radiator at 192+ before the thermostat change and now when I measure the radiator temp I've never seen it higher than 182 degrees. The gauges also run lower.

I did it because I wanted to. It will also come in handy when/if I get my A/C system built and installed, because the condenser will likely heat things up a little more..

Your math is WRONG! I have a 180° thermostat, and LN2 is actually -320.4°F :). So, that comes out to.... 37.9 jigawatts. My math is flawless.
Although, that LN2 is pretty cold; gasoline can freeze below -40 F, and when the gas hits the lower intake and freezes I'll have 0 HP total.

So, I appreciate the offer, but a test pilot/driver won't do me any good until I first find a way to prevent the gas from freezing when it hits the lower intake. Man, this is starting to look expensive. Maybe I should just drop in a 4.0?

I've read that the change to 192 was driven by tests that showed the higher temps drove fuel and water out of the oil better, improving oil life and reducing sludge. Also, back in the late 60's when the higher temp thermostats were introduced everything was carburated, the higher temps helped keep fuel from condensing on intake surfaces for lower loss, and more importantly on cylinder walls where fuel droplets can wash off oil films.

But it's good to know engine coolant temperatures are now a politically-related issue in 2019, 'cause I'm an old fart and tend not to notice such things.
