1988 ford ranger starter solenoid wiring

Left terminal:
Positive from the battery (shown here is the thick black wire i had to replace mine)
The yellow one runs to the main harness on the inner fender
GREEN this one runs to a another harness that runs toward the headlights next to the battery
(The little red one is for my cb i added)

Right terminal:
This runs to the back of the starter

Little red one on top:
This comes from the same harness as the green one next to the battery

The point of this is to show correct wiring of the starter solenoid on a 1988 2.3l 5 speed 2wd. Was hoping a mod could add this somewhere how ever they see fit

I'm not sure if you've ever seen this but there is a form and process that anyone can use to post articles for submission. It can be a bit overwhelming if you've never done it but it is worth the time and effort...especially if they use the document in the Tech Articles section.

You can review that here...and it might not take long to just post a few pics but I'm not familiar with tapatalk or whether those images can be used...may need to be hosted...I think a Mod would need to expand on this more...the images are fine the way they are and maybe they can just put them in the 4 banger section as a sticky...or whatever...I won't say any more because it may be too much work added to someone else's schedule...

anyway...review the process for your own use and maybe you have some hosting in place that would work for you.

I always carry a wire brush with me...and some of that spray on silicone stuff that works good on battery connections to keep out moisture. Or some Vaseline...that was my Dad's favourite and he was an electrician so I figured he would know about that stuff.

I think after he bought a cabin cruiser and dealt with the electrical system on that it became a must have addition to his boat toolbox.

Its a Starter RELAY, lol, my pet peeve

But every one calls it a starter solenoid

A solenoid creates motion when activated
A relay connects electrical circuits when activated

On some starter motors there is a hump and that IS a starter solenoid, when activated it pushes out the starter gear to engage the ring gear, so creates motion

So you make the call, on what that fender mounted unit is

Since we've already started down the technical verbage road...

A relay is a solenoid linked to one or more sets of electrical contacts. The solenoid part provides the motion to move the contacts open or closed.

Yes, all relays that have moving parts were called solenoids, but very very old school, like 23 skidoo, or Funky, your choice, lol

Transistors are "relays" with no moving parts but are called.........transistors

So we have a Battery saver Solenoid or Head light Solenoid

how can they be called solid state when they turn things on and off???

at least Fleming Valves got the terminology correct, as they adjust the flow.
