I've come across a donor for some stuff I need, just a quick check on if I'm in the right ball park. It's an 88 Ranger extended cab, not running at the moment, no computer, bed is off, decent shape. He's asking $500 but I'm feeling it's only worth more of the $200-250 range. Any thoughts?

Non-running! If the parts are exactly what I need I would figure what my time is worth plus the truck and then compare to what new-to-me parts would cost. Probably not worth over $300 to me and only that high if it has all the parts I wanted.

I'd offer $350. I'll pay $350 for anything. At the very least I can get my money back at the scales.

this right here. scrap is something like $200-250 a ton, that truck should be close to 2 tons. the junkyards around here will pay $300-400 for anything, and theyll pick it up. now if the owner of that truck doesnt know these things, maybe he'll bite at a low ball offer. even if you pay him $350, you should be able to make that back selling stuff off and scrapping the rest. is the engine and trans still in the truck? cat converter? aluminum wheels?

$350 thats it, and less if its been for sale a LONG TIME, or buy just what you need if he will go that way, and if he has no title use that as leverage to lower the price

frame a quite rusty but the cab is half decent, that's what I'm after. Most wrecking yards around here, if they have to tow it you are going to get very little for it, scrap yards maybe $250. I offered him $275 cash in hand takes it today no strings attached , no title needed which he didn't seem too thilled. If it weren't almost 60 miles each way I would think differently on price, plus the fact I have bought running trucks in as good or better shape for $350. If he gets another buyer that's great too.

Offer only scrap price, which will get you about $125-150. I'd like to know where the yards are that will give you $300+ for a scrap vehicle. FYI don't come to Idaho if you want to scrap anything the places here rip you off.

Anyhow regardless I'd only offer scrap price, the bed is missing, knock the price down, xxx parts are missing, knock the price down, it don't run, huge price knock down. Yep $125-150.

exactly, I scrapped a car last year and barely managed $200 after stuffing it with all the scrap around my garage. I first offered him $200 and bumped it up some. I doubt I'll go anymore on it. I'd say my judgement on price was pretty close to what it's worth. My guess is it will sit a while.

Scrap prices in Canada have dropped quite a bit, eh! I just sold a 92 with no doors, no hood, and no front fenders for $170...and the guy originally offered me $250 before I told him it was hacked...so maybe the prices are on the rise again...

I'd go a bit higher but $300 tops...by the time you tow, strip, and haul it away (or fix it) it's still an old truck worth not much more than scrap prices...unless it is running and ready for the certification it's basically scrap...

However, having said that...I paid $400 for the 92 I just scrapped because I knew I couldn't buy a box, fenders, doors and hood in decent shape (let alone actually finding one in decent shape) for less than that...

And I've already made half that back for the scrap...plus it had a set of four nearly new tires (not age wise but tread wise).

Here in SE TN the boneyards are given $10-12 per hundred #'s.......it was up to $15/100# last year............I scraped a 99 less front clip, engine, trans, & bed and got $425, this year I scrapped a rusted out 00 w/2.5L, no trans and got $325 and both were GUTTED.

apparently it varies quite a bit from location to location. around here, you absolutely cannot buy a vehicle for less than $300-400, running or not. i'd say to the OP, call your local scrap yards and figure out what they give. decide what your parts are worth and make your decision based on that.

I'd like to know where the yards are that will give you $300+ for a scrap vehicle.
Toledo. want me to get you a phone number? :icon_twisted:
