I ran outta gas the other day. put gas in it and it would start after about a min of leave the key on. fuel pump wouldnt shut off after 2-3 sec. replaced the filter. After i put a new fp relay it ran fine for a few hours then went back to wanting to stall. it will not crank unless i leave the key on for a few minutes and when it does crank it stays about 500rpm and wants to die.

May be water in the tank...or your fuel filter is plugged up...or your fuel pump fried trying to dry pump...not good for those pumps to run dry for too long...the fuel actually helps cool them.

Try changing out the fuel filter and maybe put in some gas line anti-freeze...if that doesn't help you may need to try another fuel pump.

How old is the fuel pump?
Have you ever changed it out?

Reads like fuel pump is on it's way out.
Does the 1988 have 1 or 2 fuel pumps, I think it still had 2, low pressure pump in the tank and high pressure pump on the frame rail.

If possible get a fuel pressure tester and hook it up to the fuel rail
Test pressure:
Key on engine off
at idle
at 2,500 rpm
with Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line unhooked at idle
engine off key off....see if it holds the pressure

Fuel pressure should be 30-40psi at the rail during these tests.

Does fuel pump shut off now after 2-3 seconds with the new relay installed?
If so then that bad relay may have caused the pump(s) to run all the time and caused a premature failure in the pump, from overheating.

I had to replace the in tank fuel pump in my 88' ranger a couple years back. If you need any help getting it out let me know. The hardest part is pulling the gas tank.

Good advice! You do NOT want to pull the tank if you do not have too. In my case I did since mine was rotted out and needed to be replaced...

Fuel pump relay is activated by the computer, not the key.

When you turn the key on the computer starts and will Ground the fuel pump relay for 1 to 2 seconds then shut it off, fuel pumps should stay off until engine is running, then computer will turn pump on and off based on speed and/or RPM/Load

If pumps are coming on and staying on with the key then either computer is bad or the wire from the computer to the relay is bad(grounded), OR...some one has put a jumper wire in the OBD I port, you can put a jumper in there so pump is on all the time.

Yes, pull the bed to access fuel tank.
6 bolts on the bed couple of screws for the fuel filler, and unplug the lights

I think it was in late 88 when they changed to the high pressure pump in the tank. Check the fuel pressure. How much gas did you add before you tried to start it. With it losing its prime you likely fried one or both. If you have to pull the tank put in a high pressure pump and scrap the hoakie two pump system.

Probably should put more than 5 gallons and take it on a rough ride to slosh the gas around some.:icon_thumby:

Put some injector cleaner in it the next time you fill up. You may be able to borrow a fuel pressure guage at the part store and check the fuel pressure just to confirm it is within spec.

it will not crank unless i leave the key on for a few minutes.

in reality what you are saying is the engine is dead. I.e. if will
l not turn over at all. The starter is DEAD

Your KOEO pressure is OK. I would start it and check pressure.
