ok guys,
i am by no means an amateur mechanic, but i am clearly missing something here.

i have a 97 ranger 2.3 in my garage that belongs to my sister, it broke the timing belt while she was driving. she had it to several garages but no one could get it to run again, so figuring they just didn't want to spend the time to figure it out and i had her bring it to me.

i have aligned and realigned the timing marks on the crank, cam and AUX matching diamonds and triangles correctly. yet i still cannot get this truck to run right.

currently the truck when cranked is firing too early, barely able to get it to turn over. you know rump...rump...rump... and the battery is new and charged. you can floor it get it cranking over and get it to start but the timing is still way advanced with no power and obviously dies as soon as RPMs drop.

i read that it is possible for the reluctor ring to shift during the belt failure and it stated that the ring has a dot on it that is supposed to align with the balancer keyway, but i cannot confirm this and mine is aligned with the tdc timing mark on the rim for the marker. any body seen this before or got one to check?

i just cant seem to get this one figured out, anybody got any input?

thanks for looking!

Guff

Was the crankshaft position sensor damaged when the belt broke?

I can imagine that it may have been broke, or shifted, right after the belt was flinging around.

By all means, please let us know what the problem was when you figure it out, and I'll be glad to help you out as I can.

It takes a pretty good hit to rotate the reluctor ring to move,I would think more that the crank sensor got hit and bent.Did you pull the bottom crank hub and check the line up of the keyway?Haven't seen it myself but have heard of the keyway getting bent and moving timing

Say it sounds like it's firing early? Maybe one or more of the valves hit the pistons and bent when the belt broke???????

Thats not very common on a non-interference engine. :D
