5.0L HO conversion

Have a 91' V8 ranger. Unfortunately I just burned a bearing and rathe than rebuild the motor going to pick up another from the junkyard I been eyeing up. It's a 5.0L HO from a 91 mustang. My ranger is set up for a carbureted V8. Will I be ruining this HO motor by putting my carb setup on it?

Nope, just make sure you have the right gear on your distributor and you should be good to go.

Could you elaborate? I've got a 5.0 that was given to me and I'm thinking if I decide to use it I'll just switch to a carb for simplicity. Thanks

Non roller block engines need to have a cast iron gear on the dizzy while roller block engines need a steel gear.

Also not all roller block 302s are HO and HO engines have a different firing order then non HO 302s.

The flat tappet cams use a cast iron gear and the roller cams use a steel gear.

Going to use the same intake, carb, distributor setup I'm running now but it's got a Cast iron gear. Is it east to replace with the steel gear or do I have to get a new distributor?

You cant put a steel gear on a dizzy with cast iron and vise versa. But I have heard that you can put a brass gear in place of either and be good but not sure on the life of a brass gear.

In the end, it would be easier to get a new dizzy.

Heres a link to the one that I will be using. They say it has the steel gear for the HO engines. Also it is an HEI unit too. I wanted to keep it simple and whatnot plus had a guy that I know say that he has been using it for 2 years now without any problems.

Plus was also told these units can have the brass gears put on them too.

You need the distributor gear, or a distributor your choice, from a 1986 Mustang GT 5.0L Carbed, manual transmission............ only choice for a stock gear/distributor that I know of.
I could have got the gear for @$75 a whole new distributor was @$95. I figured it was worth the $20 to avoid swapping the gears

A brass gear will not last as long as steel, obviously they are quite a bit softer.

If you are getting a different dizzy go ahead and get a steel gear. It was a $20 difference for me too, I just got a rebuilt dizzy.

Hey guys, can you fit an HEI dizzy under there? My buddy is using one of these in a 91 5.0 HO, but he has a 49 Ford, so it has more hood clearance.



Anyway, this dizzy is really nice. The coil is in the cap (HEI), and you only hook up 2 or 3 wires. He bought it from this guy on Ebay:

Those have been used a lot. I would rather use a points type with a pertronix unit. Just my .02 though

Should be able to, I don't much care for the looks of them though.
