I'd swap 4.0. You get an M5OD, a t-case and a 98-2004 drive shaft to go with it.

I'll buy your MAF stuff off you if you do it.

the driveshafts will need adjusting... the front one will fit fine if you use the trans and t/case from the explorer. the rear one will need shortened.
The trans won't matter, the A4LD never changed length and is also the same length as the M5OD. T-case should be fine and then the stock driveshafts will fit.

The 4.0 may bolt to the 2.8 and 2.9 transmissions... but it doesn't mean you should. They struggled with the engines they came with. If I was going through the motions I wouldn't.

I torched two holes for the engine mounts, trimmed the trans crossmember 1/4" and egged out the holes... wham bam I had a V8 powertrain sitting in there.

For clarification..2wd a4lds are a different length than 2wd m5ods, learned from experiance haha. The 4x4 tranmissions are really the same length though?

They aren't exactly the same. They are close enough for the drive shafts to be used interchangeably.

Fm146 tranny herd it can't handle the 4.0

So the rear drive shaft would need shortening I read somewhere you could use a 90+ ranger driveshaft ?

Thanks for the answers

No idea on the driveshaft from a ranger.
Fm146? It depends on how hard you push it. You could make it hold up to it. Or you could blow it up.

I ran my 2.9 a4ld for awhile behind my 4.0. No problem... Towed. Played offroad. Drove it daily.. No problems. I swapped it out when I was having issues that turned out to be a stripped Vss gear...

5.0 is a domino effect.. need trans, t/case, axles... so on.. so forth..

4.0 fits on the same motor mounts and bolts to the same transmissions... :thefinger:
It's the best kind of Domino effect :icon_thumby:.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like a v8; bc duh! I would. But I'm more than happy with my 4.0 in my b2.. It'll tow anything I feel safe behind it, I get about 18 mpgs in town and 21 on the road (for now! Lol), plenty of power for playing offroad.. My plan is 33's which I may be getting tomorrow!!! And I don't need the v8 to spin my tires in a mud bog... So.....?

I've never felt like I needed more hp than my 4.0 can provide. If I was building a 2wd street truck, that would be a different story.

If your is in good shape, it should last you a while depending on usage. Mine has lasted me the better part of a year so far. Good thing too because I am having a hard time tracking down the tranny I want.

I killed my first A4LD with a dying 2.8. Maybe the trans wasn't in the best shape either (after all it was possibly 17 years at the time, I got it a little over a year beforehand) One thing is for sure, aside from rebuilding they are not getting any younger. The A4LD has a long and storied history of not being that great of a transmission.

It isn't something I would risk and if I wouldn't risk it I won't tell anybody else to either. :icon_thumby:

You are there, it will be very hard to find a better time to change transmissions. My 2.8 crawled out of there pretty well with the A4LD attached, it is pretty nice to assemble the engine and trans on the floor rather than over your head. I do have a bodylift on my truck though, I am not sure if the extra firewall clearance pencils out to being easier or harder than a stock truck compared to the also higher radiator support..

my a4ld from my 2.9 was not touched other than fluid/filter change at all.. and it still worked fine when i took it out.. i put the 4.0 on in b/c i had it. i've had both of them apart tho. i rebuilt the 4.0 one b/c i didn't know how it was treated from the original owner.. the 2.9 i took apart afterwards b/c i was curious of what it looked like inside w/ 200k miles on it.. looked great.

and the only difference i ever noticed b/t the 4.0 a4ld and the 2.9 a4ld was the 4.0 one had a few more steels and friction plates in the clutch packs.. there could have been other differences, like the torque converter or something, idk... but that's all i ever saw.

my 2.9 a4ld was put back together and is running in a ranger behind a 4.0 now... no problems. not even rebuilt.. just put back together, i'd guess it probably has 270,000 miles on it now. and my 4.0 one has around 45,000(since the rebuild) miles on it and its running great.

i thought it was giving me problems, but it turned out to be the VSS gear stripped.

and the 2wd explorer we have has almost 175,000 miles on it.. w/ regular maintenance and no problems.
