The lifters in my truck are about to take a sh**. Should i just go ahead and pick a 4.0 up and swap it in once I'm done with it? I'd like more power lol. Can you keep the gen 1 dash and keep the yacht functional on the 4.0 need tips and tricks I've been searching through here and I've learned a lot but id really like some opinions.

4.0's DO NOT suffer from "lifter" issues.

If it's "ticking" it's caused by one of two potential problems, like the 2.9
it could have an "oil control" issue where the valvetrain is starved of oil
but while that is so common on 2.9's so as to find a 2.9 engine NOT
suffering from this problem is unusual.

4.0's typically suffer from a rather different malady that's considerably easier to fix.

You only need to remove the alternator and A/C compressor to fix it,
because those both must be off to access ther eal problem the pushrod sockets in the underside of the rocker arms are galled and are chewing up the pushrod tips.

So what you need is pushrods and rocker arms, FAR less invasive surgery than replacing lifters or replacing the entire engine.

It's when I first start it up. It acts like it has no air moving into the.engine. then it picks up and runs. It ticks real loud for.like 15-20seconds then it isn't as loud.

sounds like your oil pump is going. my truck does that after an oil change when there is none in the system. last maybe 3 second for me.

im guessing this:

oil pump started to die, valve guides or pushrods/rockers have eaten them selfs apart from it, causing further clogging of the oil pump, and its slowly getting worse. Id say new motor. you could have more problems then you think.

You can keep your stock dash, dunno about keeping the yacht functional though... depends on how much you spend on the swap I suppose. :icon_twisted:

Yea, I'm on my phone I meant the tach lol and it has a new oil pump in it, maybe only 8000 miles. But it could be like you said its slowly chewed itself up.

you can 4.0 swap a gen 1 and keep the dash.. .just look at the wiring diagrams of the 4.0 motor harness and make the wires match up to the dash harness of the gen 1 dash. its easy. basically 1 or 2 wires per gauge. i figured it out at the ripe ole age of like 16-17... to bad i didn't write it down huh? lol.... i have a gen 1 dash and a 4.0 from a 93 explorer... it wasn't that bad.

if you look at the wiring diagrams its very easy to figure out what wires go where to make all the gauges work, INCLUDING the tach.. my tach works just fine...

do you have a manual oil pressure gauge or the stock one? i'd say temporary hook up a manual one and see what your pressure really is. also, have you checked your oil? whens it been changed? is it low? what kind of oil?

5.0 is a domino effect.. need trans, t/case, axles... so on.. so forth..

4.0 fits on the same motor mounts and bolts to the same transmissions... :thefinger:

I have also been looking at a 4.0 swap. Read 4.0b2 little write up

So my question is this for swapping into a 86-88. You can wire it up to the 88 dash from what I'm hearing. But the main question being I want to use the explorer front and rear axles. And I would need to use a different tranny since I have the Mitsubishi one. So my question being if I just take everything basically tranny motor axles drive shafts will it all fit?

Sorry for the thread jack

the driveshafts will need adjusting... the front one will fit fine if you use the trans and t/case from the explorer. the rear one will need shortened..

i'd take everything from a donor explorer. like i did/doing...

you can wire it to the dash
idk about the transmission you have...

Fm146 tranny herd it can't handle the 4.0

So the rear drive shaft would need shortening I read somewhere you could use a 90+ ranger driveshaft ?

Thanks for the answers
