Stripped Head Bolt!!

So I am replacing my head gaskets on my 87 Bronco II. My friend who is savvy with vehicles offers to help, so we both get working he takes one side and I take the other to make good time. After we are half way done he says we have a problem and it turns out he stripped the head bolt. What should I do to get it out?

hammer on a socket that fits snugly.

For future reference, if it is a 6 point bolt, use a 6 point socket. 12 point on a 6 point is begging for troubles. I am assuming the bolts in are 6 point. +1 for the slightly smaller socket and hammer it on.

Head bolts on the Cologne engines are Torx head guys.


Drill the head of the bolt off and finish getting the head off. Then put some vice-grips on the stem and get it out that way.

Good to know adsm08. That should keep my surprise low when I am in the same situation.

There is also a tool that is made for dealing with studs. Wish I could remember what it's called. I have one, but forget the name of it.

you only need to put them ON in order. adsm08 is right we do that all the time at the machine shop for blocks with the same issue.

Geck0 is right. It doesn't really matter much if you take them off in order or not.

In some worst case scenarios the head will warp, but that is more common on aluminum heads. You should really be getting them checked and decked while they are off anyway, so it doesn't matter if it warps a bit anyway.

"werd" that's the stuff i do for a living it's all the none engine stuff i don't get lol
