Lol im almost certain that this question has been asked well over a hundred times... but i am now in the market for a lift. Problem is, idk where to even start with what i need for a good suspension lift, or even where to buy it. I have a '89 ranger 4x4.

I want to get at least 4 inches of lift from the suspension, but dont have the thousand bucks to get a skyjacker like i wish i could :/. If there is a decent lift that will give me more than 4" for a cheaper price that would be great. It is for my DD but i, of course, want it to stand up to some offroading (Not breaking would be great :P).

I will say that my budjet for this will be about 500 bucks... i know its not too much, but its all i currently have. Let me know if u know of anything good for about this... thanks

Edit: Would be great if anyone had a lift sitting around that they would sell for a good penny or two... :P

Also... i may as well jack my own thread lol...

Bodylifts... are they just simple unbolt, put in spacers, bolt on again and go things? lol will i need to do something stupid like get extensions for everything? Anyone know of some good kits for this for cheaper? Looking to get as much lift as possible to lift the truck quite a bit... fit bigger tires... mmmmm...

4" BLs good? I never really see talk about 4"s, mainly 3". (altho i never actually looked or was payying too much attension :P)

bodylifts are really only safe up to 3 inches i believe thats why no one makes a 4 inch bl, but if your looking for a cheap good lift look at the tuff country 4 inch lift i hear its the best budget lift and its around 500 to 600 bucks for the basic kit. or get a 2 or 3 inch body lift and get 2 inch skyjacker lift coils for the front and belltech shackles for the rear and that should give you around 4 inches of lift

hope this helped a bit

Thanks. I continued to look around after i asked and ran across the tuff country. So this lift will be all i will need? And is there a "better" place to buy lifts and such for cheap? I just googled :P Heres the link i ended up finding thr tuff county for about 500 (750 shipped tho :/ lol)

Btw... whats with there being tough country and ruff country suspensions? Really confused me a bit there... :P And from what i read in tech, the rough country isnt that great..

honestly, just get a 3" pa body lift, then see if you need the extra inch after that... the 3" lift makes a difference... if you do need the extra lift you can go with the 2" lift coils after...

honestly, the body lift is totally worth it, i used to be anti body lift, but then when i looked into it, it's really a good idea, the body hangs down quite low on the rangers, so your frame won't be like 2 feet below the body like chevy trucks get... with gap guards, unless you know what you're looking at, it's hard to even tell it's got a bl...

and yes you need to extend things when you do the 3"... WHAT you need to extend depends on your year... but if you get a kit, it will all be included

if i was you lookinto eather a body lift kit or a used suspension lift kit cause if you buy a lift for 500bucks it isnt the best thing to rely on. things are made cheaper and less sturdy so you can buy it cheaper.

Yea, I would try to find a used suspension lift If I were you, although a good cheap start would be to do the washer coil spacers and 2in lift shackles in the back

or 2in levling blocks with 1in blocks in the back or leave stock. and get 2 or 3in body lift

I aprieciate the tips and it all makes sense. But my problem is i dont know how tyo do any of this or even what all i will need. I have read up that the tuff country wasnt a bad lift and i wont be dont anything too crazy offroad-wise. I think my best bet would be to get the kit and then have someone help me to figure it out. That way i know im not shelling out money and turning up needing a part i never knew of.

As for the BL, that is coming... But i want to do the suspension as i want to try for more than just a try that sits higher. In the end, i want to get a 4" lift or so, than a 3" BL, with probably 31" tires because of the price going up with bigger tires. That and i will need to switch out gears and all that crap too :/ I am looking at treadwrights in terms of tires and there are 31x10.5 R15 tires for 90 bucks a peice! Retread, but i read that they are just as good. (BTW, 31x10.5 will fit on stock ranger 15s?)

I put a post up in parts:wanted to buy in the classifieds. Odds are tho, that no1 will have one to sell... I missed out on the james duff 4" for really cheap a while because i didnt have cash... damnit... :'(

Im thinking im going to buy that tuff country 4" lift... one question though... Acording to what they list on the page i linked, does it come with everything i will need? I guess im gonna have to be willing to shell out 750 for the lift... should be worth it :/ I wish i could get skyjacker quality for a decent price tho

pick up a good used one for like $400ish. and you dont have to re gear. you shuld but you dont have to i run 31's and i havent yet cause my gears will be around $1000. if you go bigger than 31's you deffently should re-gear.

see my " want 2" lift for cheap" thread...i have relocated buckets and spacers with 2.5" tuff country pivot drops, camber bushings, and rough country ra drops

my rig already had the pivot drops and spacers. but i paid 60 used for the ra drops, 60 for the camber bushings, and nothing for coil bucket drop. i already had grade 8 bolts

regear is not needed for 31" a lift shouldn't really be needed either, although i don't know much about the older gen's... my truck came stock with 31x10.5 on 15x7" rims, so measure the width of your rim, if they are 7" they are PERFECT for 31x10.5 i would think that they should fit regardless, what size tires do you have right now?10.5 is roughly a 265 tire (first number in metric measurements) if the tires on your truck right now are XXx10.5x15 or 265/xx-15 or close to either of those, you will be fine putting 31x10.5 on them...

as for gears, i have 33x12.5 and absolutely no plans to regear... though i have 4.10's stock... 31" should be fine with most ratios... the 2.9 should be able to turn them

and as for retreads, if they are done properly, they are as good as brand new tires... if not you might lose a tread going down the highway or on a trail... but that should be covered by a warranty... if i knew there was a retread place here, i woulda gotten a set when i put my 33"s on, retreads will probably be my next set of tires

yea if he has 3.73 or something around that he will see a difference. my friends ranger saw a very small difference but 33's were even bigger loss of power.

you cant fit 31's on a 1st or 2nd gen ranger without rubbing. with a levling or 2in lift you can though

Truck came stock with 215/75r15s, i stuck some 235s i had laying around on tho. And with a little 2.9, i will need to regear, no? The engine doesnt have that much power to begin with... however it is a exhausted 292k drivetrain... :/
