Im building a 302 to swap in my 92 and my question is do the gt40 and gt40p heads work with carbed intakes or is there better choices in heads at a reasonable price

Both heads will work great with a carb'ed intake and they are a great bang for the buck if you are getting them at a fair price and they dont need a bunch of work. The only problem you should be very aware of is trying to get headers that will fit the GT40P heads and your Ranger. You will have no problems getting headers to work with the GT40 heads. Its very easy to get 350hp using either sets of the GT heads and it very posible to get 400hp but your drivability will suffer some at that power level. There is alot of better choise heads out there if you can get them a cheap price and you will just have to keep shoping for them and have cash in hand and ready to pick them up when they come around as there are many other people out there doing them same thing as you. Good luck. :icon_thumby:

What is the problem with headers and gt40p heads? I keep hearing about it but do not know the difference.

Don't have a picuture of the stock head or the GT-40 handy but here are the plugs coming out on the "P" heads, almost straight out rather than the almost 45 deg of the others. That's what causes the problems.

when did these heads become common equipment on the explorer?

i have a 96 exp 5.0,i haven't really looked at what it's equiped with,or seen how to tell.the pic of the sparkplug above is the first identifying feature i've seen.

The switch to P heads started in the middle of the 1997 model year.

4 bars on the front of gt40p heads, 3 bars on gt40 heads. Can't be seen with the accessories on.

Front corner of GT40 heads say "GT", front corner of GT40P says "GTP".

You can see the gt40 heads here:

And you can sort of see "GT" cast in the corner here.

EDIT: Two comments about this photo. Number one, there is no hand in the glove, number two, the header is unbolted, I was swapping the heads at this time.

cool,thanks:icon_thumby:

figures i've got one year earlier.so were the gt40 heads stock on the 96,then?i never even knew about these on the explorer till just recently.

Which are better gt40 or gt40p?:icon_confused:

Well that can be answered in many ways.
If you are wanting to use them as door stops then they both are the same.
If you are wanting them for a ranger V8 conversion then the GT40's are way better.
If you are wanting them for a Mustang for stop light to stop light performance the GT40P's are better.
If you want them for all out higher RPM performance in a race application then the GT40's would be a little better.
So to answer your question; Its all on what you are wanting them for as to which one is better. :icon_thumby:

Well put!

I have an idea, since I have plain old 84 302 heads,I may just use factory 84 rear exit manifolds. That way I dont have all the fitment issues.

Just wanted to point out the comment I added to my previous post, it kinda made me laugh.

ya,i kinda figured out both those points looking at the photo.

still curious though, should my 96 explorer have the gt40 heads?.i can' find any info on this in the tech section.also, what are the differences between these heads and the old regular smallblock heads?

Here's a little bit of info. Doesn't mention any flow details.

A '96 Explorer came with GT40 heads. Look for the id right beside and right above the long bolt in my photo.
