Like the title says, I am occasionally getting a grinding going into reverse. This does not happen if I go move it up to 1st and then to reverse and then release the clutch pedal. What do you guys think? Leaking slave cylinder? How many days do I have to live?

maybe a leaking slave.. but are you pushing the clutch in and immediately trying to jam it in reverse? almost all manual tranny's will grind if you do that.

you either need to let the gears stop spinning or you need to put it in a gear first and THEN put it in reverse (i find 2nd works well)

a basic test is to push the clutch in and wait a couple seconds and if it still grinds then the clutch is not releasing all the way.

your transmission could have a worn reverse synchronizer, but it doesn't really matter when you let the gears stop turning

Think most transmission will grind going into reverse if the truck is still rolling since there isnt a syncro on the reverse gear, once the wheels stop it will go in fine.

correct, but an M5OD has a synchronized reverse, or at least if someone hasn't tried to jam it into gear repeatedly.

when i rebuilt my tranny the reverse synchro was so badly mangled i had to replace it

If only we could all be the first owners on 0-mile Rangers! :)

I just swapped in a supposed 44k mile M5OD and its kinda sticky going into first. Might be the syncros, grrrreat. Low miles but who knows exactly who drove it in its short life. :annoyed: Think next time I'll buy a cheap high-mileage trans and buy the $300 parts kit and rebuild it myself. :D

Try this...

When you want to go backwards, come to a stop, put it in 2nd (any forward gear will do, but you say it goes into 2nd fine) wait 2 seconds. Now try to put it in reverse. See if it still grinds.

I'm working on it. By the time I'm done with my 87 the driver's seat will be the only part that has any significant miles on it.

did that with my 85 yota, and it ended up being the clutch was so worn down. started with not going in reverse. then u had to go to 2nd then reverse, then it wouldnt hardly go in any gear when u were stopped
