Ok i am Fed at the moment. Went to Advanced to see what the Engine Light was for and the Code ~P0171 and P0174~ came up. And then later as i was going back home it started acting weird, not wanting to accelerate and idle going from 300 - 1500 RPM's. And Clues to this FML Moment? Pics and web sites to fix this problem would be most Appreciated OR if anyone else had this problem.

OH i almost For got is on My 2004 4.0L Ranger with 73,000 Miles if that Helps any!!

Thank you for the web site, i need pics of where these are in the Engine cause i don't have a clue. I can only find the Mass air Sensor or MAF i think its called.

on either side on the exhaust manifolds (left and right). you should have two O2 sensors before it meets the flange leading to the cats.
theyre responsible for measuring the left and right banks.

p0171=system lean bank 1, p0174= system lean bank 2

check/clean maf? fuel pressure issue?. I am not sure if this 4.0 is one of the ones with the intake manifold gasket issue or if it was corrected by 2004

oh and change the FUEL FILTER!!!!!!!

when we refer to a "bank" it is the entire side of that engine. a inline 4 has 1 bank.

when discussing the banks I would not use the terms left and right. I would refer to them as Bank 1 and bank 2. on Fords Bank 1 is the passenger side of the engine and bank 2 is the drivers side................and in case you are thinking this ....... the problem is not your o2 sensors!!!!

You are correct, but he stated that he has a 4.0l, which has bank 1 and bank 2...

Your engine is designed to run correctly on the ability to hold vacuum. With that said, check you vacuum. If the engine has a vacuum leak the engine will run lean which will give you your 'lean codes.' See if you have any hoses that are damaged i.e. cracked, split, torn, etc.

yikes..........not this again...........you need to read the thread in it's entirety. I was using the inline 4 as an example............go to post #5 and you will see that I asked him about his "4.0"............I was not even going to post anymore but the other were calling the "banks left and right.......that is not the best way to do it, it gets confusing..........using bank 1 and bank 2 is best..............please take the thread ........it's yours

ThankYou for info guys, will be heading to Advanced to get a new air filter cause mine was jacked up and i have never replaced it before so i have know idea how old it is. will clean the MAF sensor. Might buy a new Fuel filter depending on the price, cause i am close to broke at the moment.

From what i gather of the info is the my trucks code says that its running to low on fuel/air (Lean). So investigate the incoming air area and and fuel system? Oh and looking at wires and hoses, No hoses are broke or anything, but a wire to my DPFE is worn to what looks like the wire, i will cover with electrical tape, would this be fine, and can that cause problems?

I found my Fuel filter on the drives side, looks easy to take off any advice or cautions to changing my Fuel Filter, I have been reading my Haynes Repair Manual so i am learning what i can after work, but its slow going.

Again thanks for the Info,
<~~~~still a newbie learning:dntknw:

Oh i was think about when this happened and that morning i smelled what i thought was gasoline, i did not think much cause i had filled up with gas and spilled some on accident on my pants, would that be any indication to anything? Or am i crazy case i could not tell if it was gas or burning oil?

OK! Thanks For the post guys! I changed air filters and cleaned MAF Sensor! Had Engine code Reset and No Problem Since!! And getting Ready to Sell my Ranger And Any New Mexico/West Texas Drivers Looking to buy a Ranger??!!!!
