24 Hours Of LeMons & I've got a crazy idea if anybody's up for it...

Is there no prize for winning?

You want in on this little escapade?

I'd have to think about it. CT is a long way from ND. Flying in for the race probably wouldn't be an issue for me but I wouldn't be able to physically participate in the build to make it race worthy.

What kind of speeds do they average?

You can put up to a 24 gallon tank on the vehicle, 24 gallon fuel cell in the bed would probably be the way to go, less stops for fuel that way.

Could probably remove the tailgate for weight or put an el cheapo (think homemade from aluminum sheet) hard cover on the bed for aerodynamics, plus an adjustable NASCAR Trucks style rear spoiler for downforce!

....ok, maybe the spoiler idea crossed the line.

cut coils and a exploder 8.8 trac-lock spring-under for strength and drop?lighten everything by using a holesaw to make speed holes in EVERYTHING! super swiss cheese body

Cut springs are unsafe, and not race worthy, and a swiss cheese truck is def over the line. IT would lose all structural integrity. A 200 dollar bonestock POS with a 2.3 of anyyear. Lose all interior and the swap the fuel tank for the fuel cell, (the balance exchange would be worth it alone) you figure 100 for a fuel cell unless one of our guys fabs one puts it at a 300 dollar truck. Port and polish (as well as port matching) the entire intake would be relatively cheap if any of our fellows has a machien shop. it would be worth at least 35 hp. I base that number on the principle of swapping 96-98 mustang 4.6 heads with the PI heads (power improved) which basically just have a port job after 99. An 8.8 disc brake conversion would enhance braking and shorten up lap times. I would recommend a 99+ 8.8 from a ranger with the factory 4.11 gearing, save us on cost of purchasing gears. Its cheap too but were at 350 dollars in the truck now. See how it adds up quick? Junkyard springs off a ranger GT if they could be found or donated would go along way towards handling. BUt the tire will be the principle handling inprovement. Open exhaust since there wouldnt be any low end torque really required, cheap and effective (or at least glasspacks) And to burn up your last 150 dollars since I cant think of anything else an electric water pump and/or cost depending an electric power steering pump and rad fan. These would free up drag on the motor. And thats assuming the stock rad itself can handle 24 hrs of 4000rpm plus. The only other thing I could think of would be a new set of valve springs to handle higher rpms, but i think its a bit mroe involved than that so maybe not. Mustang GT injectors are 6 lbs/hr more efficient andGT MAF with GT throttle body can be fitted and COmputer tuned without actually revealing that particular cost but still not breaking any rules. Its more than .02 cents but if you get at least one idea from me I guess its worth it LOL.

EDIT:: Boxing the frame would definitely be a cheap mod. The less flex this truck had the better, which reminds me GT sway bars and shock tower braces. WOW IDeas are flowing in now, Im gonna hush before I get the idea to enter a ranger in the real Le Mans lol.

They average around 60-70, maybe a tad more depending on the track. At the end of the front straight at Stafford some might have hit 90, but that'd be it.

Besides, "Ranger Aerodynamics" is an oxymoron.

Actually, that could be a good theme for one of the trucks. Make t look like a giant hunk of cheese!!!!

Any of our Wisconsin brethren have any extra foam cheese wheel laying around?

Yeah, but if we're going for an R3 (short for gen 3) there should be slightly better aero than an R1 or R2.

I'll buy the passenger seat from the race Ranger for $1000...:D

Okay. You're in. We've got a year to prepare.

Just keep in mind this is NOT unprecedented. Didn't SCCA have a truck class back in the late 80's? Didn't Rangers do okay there?

God, look what I started... :icon_twisted:

So going over the 500 limit gets you 1 lap for every 10 dollars they decide you went over....and its a claims race. The organizer can claim your car for 500 if they choose to. Sounds like you better keep it under 500!

Just remember before it's made too awesome that the race promoters reserve the right to purchase it for $500 from the team, additionally, the audience (or was it other teams?) can vote it to be destroyed before you can even finish the race.

17" Mustang take off wheels would be pretty good, could wrap them in 245/45R17 tires for good handling and grip (and neither would count toward the $500)

Another option instead of swapping an 8.8 in would be to just put in a spool or weld the 7.5 diff to save some green.
