need help w/ home theatre setup

Now, we used to have digital cable, through Cox Communications, with which we had a cable box. However, to save some money, we got rid of that, so now we are back to the ol' coaxial cable through the wall straight into the TV. But the thing is, i don't know how to hook up our surround sound to the tv now.

It used to be like this (path of data containing the cable information, both picture and audio)

wall -> cable box (audio/video in) -> surround sound receiver (audio/video in) -> tv (AV1) ((the ports are named such AV1, AV2, etc))

But now, it's just

wall -> tv


so I figure I need some sort of audio out on my TV to bring the audio signal (coming from the coaxial cable from the wall) to the surround sound receiver, however there is no audio out that I can figure out how to use on my TV! is that clear enough for help?

Let me know if I can clarify anything.

the "audio out" are the black and red speaker connections. with the speakers in your tv, plus the 2 you can add, that would give you a very low power surround sound.

you could connect the "wall" to your receiver, then use the HDMI OUTPUT from your receiver to your tv's HDMI INPUT, then you could use your amplifier just like you did with the cable box. good luck.

the thing is, those speaker outputs are already hooked up. and we have a 5 channel surround sound (center channel, two fronts, two rears, and a sub ((not sure if the sub makes it a 6 channel or not)))

and i'd have to check, but i'm not sure there's a spot on my receiver for a coaxial cable or an HDMI output, but maybe there is. and i'd rather not have to go buy cables, because i'm pretty sure that we had it hooked up this way before we got digital cable.

nearly all receivers made in the last 15 years or so have an input for a 75ohm antenna input and output to your tv. just go wall--> receiver, receiver-->tv with s-video or rgb or yellow video cable. all receivers made in the last 15+/- years have those output options. sound should still be in your receiver.

the only audio i'm using from the tv is for a sound bar that is already on the tv, it's mounted right below it. i figure why not use them? you don't think it will mess up the imaging that bad do you?

noted above about the red/black speaker outputs on my tv, there are no empty slots to plug the soundbar into, and it was manufactured with the tv, so i would assume the tv is giving the correct power to the speakers that came with it, and i don't want to ruin them.

your tv speakers will not be used at all, so there is no way to "ruin" them. if you have a receiver that is 5.1 channel surround, you will be using those speakers in place of the tv speakers using the instructions i gave in the previous posts. all the tv will get is the video that is passed through the surround receiver from the wall cable to your tv. your receiver will be powering all the speakers in your surround system including the sub woofer.

if you are trying to mix speakers from your tv with speakers in your surround system, probably won't work that well. most tv speakers would be quickly overpowered by the receiver, even if you cold get them to work together.

guess you need to give more description of the receiver and speakers you are using.

Run an RCA cable from the SPDIF out to a digital coaxial connector on the receiver. Done.

I would run either the component or hdmi from the cable box to the tv, and then use optical cable from the box to the receiver. It's what I have configured on my 360.

all that was really necessary was to just run the antenna cable directly to the receiver. nothing else had to be touched really.

I have never seen a receiver that has a connector for cable tv. They all have a 75 ohm connector, but that's for an FM radio antenna. If you did connect the cable tv line to the receiver, how does the receiver know what channel you're watching? They don't have tv tuners in them. You change channels with the tv, not the receiver.

You need to simply connect the tv line straight to the tv. The SPDIF out is the only audio output on that tv. Its the same thing as a digital coax out. Just run an RCA cable from that to any digital coax input on the receiver.

i'm gonna try to kinda start over. trying to give as much information as possible... it's not anything against you guys, you've been great help. obviously opposing viewpoints creates the best outcome. and i couldn't have asked for better help so far.

the thing i think i'm missing right now is some sort of an audio out from my TV to my receiver. (as noted in the post before this one by exbass, i tried to do what you said. with two different cables. one was a 2 plug red/white and the other was single plug orange. both ended up with audio to the surround sound, however it was only audible at a very high volume, and ended up with obvious static and it was only out of the right speaker)


My setup includes:
TV (Magnavox 37MF337B)
Surround Sound Receiver (Sony str-k750p)
DVD/VHS player (Magnavox MWD2205)

Obviously I want all audio to play out of the surround sound. The TV is my only device to show video.


Right now, this is what is wired up:
*Coaxial cable from wall to TV
*Red/White/Yellow from DVD to Receiver
*Speaker wires from receiver to speakers (Center, 2 fronts, 2 surround, and powered sub)
*Yellow cable from receiver to TV (This takes the video signal from the DVD player and plays it on the TV)



The only thing I need to accomplish is to have the audio data from the Coaxial cable going to the TV routed to the receiver. In more basic words, I want my cable audio to play on the surround sound.

Well, as I said before, pretty much the only way you can get TV audio to play on your receiver is through the digital coax. It appears the only coax on your receiver is on the DVD input. (the "DVD coaxial in") So, whenever you're watching TV, switch to the DVD input on the receiver.

You could leave the DVD player hooked up as-is, however, in order to get Dolby Digital surround, (Dolby Digital is INFINTELY better than Dolby Pro-Logic) you NEED to use a digital cable (either a digital coax cable or digital optical). Since you're using the digital coax for your TV, the only other digital audio input is the optical input that's connected to Video 2. So, I would connect the DVD player to Video 2 instead of the "DVD" input, and use an optical cable for it. (You don't need the red and white audio cables, only the yellow for video, and the optical for sound.)

TO SUMMARIZE: Connect an RCA cable from "SPDIF out" on TV to "DVD coax in" on reciever. Use "DVD" input for cable TV.

Connect yellow RCA cable from DVD player to "Video 2" input on receiver. Connect digital optical cable from DVD player to "Optical Video 2 in" on reciever. Use Video 2 for watching DVDs.

well i did give that a try, and it doesn't work. i put the cable into my receiver, and have a yellow RCA from my monitor out on the receiver to the video input on my tv and the video doesn't come up. maybe i did it wrong, but it didn't work.


like i said, i don't really care how it works, i just want it to work.
