jeep cherokee vs ranger

sorry not reading all that was posted but the 4.0 and AW4 (Auto Tranny) is very reliable combo. some will say avoid the renix while others like them (me) as far as the comment about being expensive to fix I call BS parts are cheap and there are tons of them on the road so used parts are every where. Avoid Pre 87 Models, check the passenger side floors they rust out. 87-90 can sometimes be found with a dana 44 rear axle. 91+ have the better cooling systems. Some say heads are prone to crack but it is a very limited production of heads that had issues My favorite years are the 87-90 with the renix system followed by the 93 and the 99 model years 2000+ went to a low pinion front axle which is not as strong. I owned my 88XJ for 10 years and just sold it in Narch since I really need a pick up otherwise I would still be driving it.

both great 4x4's, I'd go with the ranger tho, chicks dig em and they can be badass!

You can bang chicks in the back of an Cherokee, even when the weather is bad and/or cold.

Call BS all you want, All I know is that when my neighbor had to replace the head for a new head and valves it cost him 2k, now granted I am in alaska so the cost is going to be a a lil higher but thats rediculas. O ya and the head was cracked and valves were toast, it had about 180k miles on it and had very good upkeep. Im sure you can find use parts cheep but if you have to buy brand new ones they are not always cheep. I also had a friend who had to replace the same thing on his jeep and cost him about the same......im sorry but for that price you can buy a whole new engine for some cars. My brother enlaw had a Grand Cherokee and the engine (some were not connected to the engine but were were to the computer is what he told me) went out, he found one used for around 600 bucks, how ever he had electrical night mares with it and ended up spending another 600 replaceing wiring sensors on the engine. Also when the temp dropped down below 20F the engine STILL would not run, it would shot off and wouldnt start.... He ended up selling it cause he spent a total of 4k on it and it never ran right or in cold weather....he bought it for 1200 bucks.....ya they arent expensive to fix...ok Call BS all you want I know 3 diffrent people that spen a pretty good penny to fix there Jeeps. Yes if you can find used parts then its cheeper but not if you have to buy brand new parts.

Are you seriously complaining about an engine needing work at 180k miles? FYI, most engines are dead by then. And I am sorry but if someone spent that much and couldn't fix the problem, he didn't find the problem but was just throwing parts at it.

No i wasnt complaining about the milage, was simply stating the COST of it to repair it..... And he took it in and had it inspected by 2 diffrent shops and none of them could find the problum either. Half the parts that went on that engine were put on by mechanics, not him. After they couldnt find the problum he sold it.

Maby they did get screwed either way, every one I know who has had to fix a jeep spent alot on it.

As far as your comment "The comment about being expensive is BS" I really did not appreciate that, you could have worded that much better...... Im done argueing here, I have seen 3 people spend way more on there Jeeps than I ever have to fix my fords or chevys and maby down there it is cheeper, but it doesnt call for that kind of responce. To say that another member talking bull shit, i meen come on lets call it what it is. BS is just the nice way of saying it....im done in here no point in arguing this. Not going to benifit any one arguing.

thanks for all your input.
i am going to have to considerer all that stuff before i buy i haven't even looked at incerance(bad spelling) witch i plan on doing tonight.

The key here is that while the parts may be a bit more expensive they tend to last alot longer. I had an XJ with nearly 230,000 miles on it and still has the original starter, alternator, A/C, and all the sensors, (renix)

I have found that the jeeps tend to be very cheap to operate because of the longevity of the parts

same here I have owned 5 jeeps and if they made an extended cab pick up truck I wouldn't even be looking at Rangers. Saying they are expensive I find difficult to swallow though. they are no more expensive to repair than a Ford, Chevy etc... as a matter of fact when I needed a cruise control switch for my 88 blazer I found I could get the switch from Jeep for half the cost of what chevy wanted. Jeep uses everyone elses parts so the parts are no more expensive so I don't know whhere the "increased" cost comes from

That is not entirely true, the starter for the 4.0 is twice as much as the ranger, but it also last 3X longer. In all the jeeps Ive owned Ive only had to replace one alternator and one starter. I have had to replace a bunch of injectors but that is the nature of the beast

Stay clear of 1984-1986 models with a V6 because its a GM 2.8 with a Motorcraft carb and a nightmare of vacuum lines and even then was good for maybe 115 HP in top shape

Where did you find that gibberish.

I've worked on GM 2.8s and I'm familiar with the Ford 2.8. Pretty sure they aren't the same engine.

The Ford 2.8 was an evolution of the Tanus V4. The GM 2.8 was a similar 60* push rod engine, but the Ford 2.8 was a clear evolution of the Tanus and Cologne engines, its not a GM engine.

cherokees are nice but u'll need to upgrade or get a new axle for anything over 33's and even 33's a dana 30 is alittle weak for it.

the d35 on rangers with upgraded u joints can easily run 35's with alittle moderation. and equal in strength of the d44 u'd swap into the cherokee...

just some food for thought...
