What tool to use?

Can someone tell what dang tool I need to use to get my ignition switch out? It has some weird hex bolts with pegs in the middle of the holes. Help. Thanks.

i've actually never had one apart but it sounds like a standard security allen bit. they have a hole in the center to fit around the peg on the bolt. you can get em at sears i know for sure.

He's talking about the switch on the steering column, not the TFI module, I know what you're talking about, those screws are a bitch too, took me forever to find the perfect sized socket for it.

The TFI module is held to the distributor with hex head screws with 5.5mm (7/32")
and they sit in a deep recess.

The TFI is a PITA.

a tamper proof T27 torx bit will set you back a whopping $2 if you buy if from snap-on

You can get a SET of tamper proof TORX bits from your local chain auto parts store for about $7

Yep. I ground down a craftsman socket and it worked perfectly...it took awhile, but it was free...wasn't even my socket...lol

Why bother? You can BUY a special Ford TFI removal tool (looks like a plastic knob with a dinky socket on the end) from Lisle for less than $5.

Why bother waiting to order it or drive all over hell and half acre when you can grind a socket for free? And it's doubtful a socket that small is ever used for anything else anyways. I actually found a socket that fit without moding it though.

I've run into that one before. Crap, 5mm is too small, 6mm is too big. WTF were they thinking?!

Most of the light-duty bolts in the vehicle are a similar size (e.g., the ones holding the evap box to the firewall).

When I picked one of these up, I didn't have to look far at all. It was in the same auto parts store as the TFI....

where are these 5.5mm holding the EVAP box in?

All the evap boxes I've seen were held to the firewall with NUTS,
typically 7/16(common english size) not the far smaller 7/32" (5.5mm)

and the evap box itself is usually held together with screws with
8mm hex heads.

and for the record that tiny 5.5" IS used in other locations... holding the Cruise control
"brain" in place under the dash, holding up gen1 hood release handles, on 4.0's a 5.5" holds the EDIS module to the firewall and on ALL Gen ones the "jesus handle" above the door is held in with 5.5mm head screws.

they are found in other locatons as well, but I can't bring them to mind at the moment.
