It would if you had a bad wiring connection. Depending on what you used - solder, crimps, etc, this is where I'd look first. Butt crimps suck, my dad showed me how to solder wires together and I've never used them since. If they are simply electrical taped together, redo all of it

A bad alternator can also put out too much voltage, this would certainly shut down a HU if it had protection against such situations.
You could also hook it up to a known good charged battery (I keep a couple lying around) and see if it dies that way.
