Engine conversion

So I have a 1999 xlt 3.0 4x4 and I have swapped the 3.0 for a 1998 4.0 (ohv) out of a explorer and I know I have seen it on here saying you have to adapt the fuel lines from a 2 line to a 1 line but I need someone to tell me how in more step by step and in more detail cause that's the only thing holding me back and help would be great thanks in advance
 
According to my manual, the 1998 4.0 pushrod engine used a supply and return line in the 98 explorer. I seems the 4.0 SOHC engine does too but I am not as sure about that one.
 
Ok yes it does and my 99 3.0 had a 1 line fuel system and it is my understanding that I can make the 98 4.0 run off the same I just have to adapt the fuel lines together and that what I'm wanting someone to help with thanks
 
the 97-2000 rangers are varied with the systems due to flex fuel options and ext cab vs reg cab ect.


running the system complete is ideal that the engine and rails is matched with.

1998 engine....1998 system.


that said i would just adapt it to what is there, because that is what i do.

I do not know much about the single fuel line systems, but it seems if it is a single line, just hook the single line up and plug the return port?

I believe they have some sort of controller under the truck and varies the output of the pump according to pressure? Sounds like more things to fail, but I usually do not like stuff I do not understand and am not familiar with.
 
The single line is the “returnless” system which runs a higher pressure and the return is off the fuel filter with a pressure regulator on the fuel pump/sender assembly.

The return style system (two lines at the rail) runs a lower pressure and uses a regulator on the rail.

The best way to adapt it would be to convert the 4.0 to the returnless style to match the truck. That would be injectors and fuel rail plus computer and I’m not sure what else. I know I’ve had to change cam sensors on stuff before and change the engine harness.

Your other option would be to convert your fuel system to the return style. That would be to change the pump/sender assembly, lines and fuel filter.

Or get something of the correct style.
