Hello. Looking to purchase a ford 2008 ranger xlt from a friend. It runs good and drives good but I noticed oil underneath the truck mid way. I attached a picture. Is this a serious repair? Is this a diy or shop repair. Thank you.

Judging by the location it's either going to be rear main seal which if you're asking is a shop repair or valve covers which should be a DIY fix depending on how handy you are, unless someone else says the valve covers are a pain in the rear... not much phases me, I'd just run that and keep up on oil level until I have the time which is the current method on the oil leaks on my '97 :)

Thanks, for the help. I’m going to clean up the bottom and see where the actually leak is coming. I’m glad I found this forum! Looks like I will be lurking the threads for help. The truck has 82,000 miles so I’m going to go foward with the purchase. $7500 what do you think? Other than the AC not working and a cracked windshield, no noise from the engine and the 4x4 shifts smoothly.

In Washington unless you're on the coast I wouldn't expect any rust that would even be on anyone here's radar, all my stuff is minty fresh compared to stuff I've seen with swiss cheese frames and flinstones floorboards of these rust belt people :). I can pick any bolt on pretty much any of my vehicles (aside from some leaf spring bolts, you'll get that) and take them out without issue.

With that few miles still either rear main or valve cover gaskets. Being a 4x4 that eliminates a 4 cylinder and I don't remember what year the 3L got nixed so I assume 4L? I don't know jack about the OHC engines, I've changed a thermostat in one once but that's it...

bell housing looks dry, both ends of transmission pan are wet. my guess is transmission pan gasket. easy to replace.
probably could use a filter replacement, gasket gets replaced on that action.

Yeah, he bought from a dealership. I figured it was a fleet car from the Midwest or something

Waiting for the bank to open to get the cash. Then tab and new license. Later Today, Planning on doing an oil change, coolant exchange, and transmission pan gasket and filter. Clean the bottom. Any recommended oil preferences?
