Hello all.
I just bought a heavily modded 2004 Ranger 2wd, 3.0L, with an automatic transmission. I'm facing a transmission issue, right now.
Here's what I am finding:
  • At first, it was just fine. I shifted a little hard going into 2nd, but not too bad.
  • I turned off the engine to go into the store, and when I went to drive off, it wouldn't shift right.
  • When in drive, it will not shift to 2nd gear while driving.
  • If I manually put the gear selector in 2nd, it will shift to 2nd.
  • It shifts and moves in reverse just fine.
  • I made sure the right fluid is in it.
  • The speedometer doesn't work, and I never saw it work. I just bought the truck.
  • I found that this truck is supposed to have the 5R44E transmission.
  • When I looked for the speed sensor, where it was supposed to be, there was no speed sensor. Looked all over and there are no signs of a speed sensor, or where it should go.
  • The case is stamped k95gt-7006-bbr. I'm not sure what model that is, but when I looked it up, the speed sensor is located on the top near the back end. There is a vent in that location.
  • I have a green 2-pin plug and a black 2-pin plug dangling down. I searched all over, can't see where they go.
Did this transmission get swapped in, to replace the original?

If there is any more info, you need, please feel free to ask.

Sounds like somebody has made or swapped in a manual valve body... If that's even possible on that model.

Could be, but after I kept researching, it looks like my truck was supposed to have a 5R55E 6-138 in it. The 5R55E has sensors where those loose plugs are hanging.

is there a tv arm on the trans near the shifter?

So, what is manual valve body?
It's a mod to an automatic transmission to make it act like a manual. Only real use that I know of is drag racing tho.

I don't believe that is the case, here. It shifted by itself, before. Just stopped shifting one night.

TV stands for Throttle Valve in this case. Something I don't think applies by your year. Or on Fords at all that I'm aware of.

5R55E would have been found in 4.0 SOHC powered trucks and only 4.0 SOHC powered trucks. 5R44E would have been found in your 3.0 truck. The link below seems to suggest that you have at least the case from a 4R55E (those were found in 4.0 OHV powered trucks from '95-up.)

This seems to indicate that "95GT-7006-BCR" is a 1995 only part:

A brief look around seemed to indicate that the main case between 4R44E, 4R55E, 5R44E and 5R55E is the same so ASSUMING that is true, my guess is someone had your transmission apart and there was a reason to replace the case, OR, someone had a 4R55E on hand and swapped a 3.0 bellhousing onto it. The latter seems more likely given your extra plugs and odd trouble symptoms.

After beating my head against the keyboard, while searching on Google, it appears my trans was swapped out. It looks like the current transmission is a 4R44E and I am supposed to have a 5R44E.

Am I correct in believing I'm supposed to have a 5R44E?

It might be toast. It doesn't shift at all.

I believe you are correct on this. I believe the current transmission is from a 95 era Ranger, and I am supposed to have a 5R44E.

Now I have to go out and buy another transmission. That's not very fun.

The truck has 33" tires on it, and it feels like it was not regeared. Would you guys recommend 4:56 gears?

Here are some pics of my kids truck.
