Uh oh? Part on drain plug magnet.

almost looks like a bypass seat for the oil psi...but not sure on a 4.0.

The other thing is drive it and see if anything frags out

The little tab on the end would have held a spring in place so oil pressure relief valve might be a possibility. Is the pressure still good at idle? If it's from your 88, I think that might still have bimetal gauges. If it has the later magnetic gauges it will show about 2/3 of the scale if it sees any pressure at all and you'll need to connect a mechanical gauge to really know.
I've seen similar parts in automatic transmission valve bodies.

Mid year 87 the actual reading went away

Isn't that too small to be an oil pressure relief? Not sure I've ever seen one that small. It also doesn't look to be round... I know I've never seen one that wasn't perfectly round that fit into a machined bore.

cap side not piston seal. and i figure it was from before the rebuild....did not get cleaned out. dislodged at some point and here ya be...

Looks to me like a fitting of a sort that went from a 1/4" to a smaller tube of some sort that you might find in a quik-lube kind of place or gadjit

I have a bare block and an oil pump from a 99 in my basement if you want to see anything in particular. I know it’s not much help but that’s all I have.

Thanks for your time, the pressure is good at idle, 38lbs warm and over 50 running, I have a digital gauge as well as the stock one. This motor is from a 1991 explorer, I added the comp cams stage 2 cam and odessa heads, headers etc. It sounds and runs great but this is a stressor as it only has like 3500 miles.

Thanks, an old timing tensioner broken to show hinge part? Only thing I can figure at this point. Thanks!

I screen filtered the oil that came out of it and clear, no chunks or metal so looks like run it for now, thanks all for your input! Really a heart sinking thing to see a part on the magnet! Does anyone know how to tell if the chain tensioner is bad w a nearly new chain? W these aftermarket (Odessa) heads and the cam I'm running w headers it sounds really good, w no new rattles etc, idles at 900. I'd hate to break down the motor for nothing. Thanks again.
