hello- i just bought an 89' ranger 4x4 with a bad transmission, 2.9l engine. sorry im new to the rangers so excuse my ignorance. ive been reading alot on what will work and what wont. ive found a 92' ranger 4x4 with a 4 cyl. in it. its sitting on the ground so i cant really tell what trans is in it or do any measuring. from what ive read it should be the mazda M50D-R1 as long as it was never changed. it has a manual transfer case where mine is electric shift-which is fine i dont care as long as it will work. just want somebody with more knowledge on the situation than me to verify this will work. if it will, will i have to make any changes to the driveshafts or anything else?

Welcome.

The 2.9 and the 2.3 have different transmission-to-engine bolt patterns. The M5OD does not have a removeable bellhousing, so a 2.3 transmission will not work on a 2.9.

The 2.9 (and the earlier 2.8) and the 4.0 share the same bellhouse bolt pattern, so either one is what you need. The door sticker transmission code is "M", but it will need to be a 2.9 or 4.0 donor truck.

What part of 'bama are you in?

and also what year model trucks will have a trans that will work?

BW1354 would work and if its a manual one like you said I would get it. There harder to find. Get the front drive line with it also. You will have to get it shortened a 1inch I believe. Id defiantly get the BW1354.

That's pretty country.

I'm just in Georgia, close to the state line, roughly southeast of Heflin.

Good luck on the transmission hunt.
