Okay. I love my little 3.0. Hard to believe, but I do. Somehow I worked some magic on it, because it is one sweet running V-6. And the side exhaust sounds like a big V-8. I've been asked more than one what size V-8 is under the hood. When I tell them a 3.0 V-6, "Sure sounds good!" Despite not having a muffler, the intake makes more noise than the exhaust when the pedal is on the floor. Compliments of a holey hood. LOL!!

What do you love about your 3.0 v6 ? what magic did you work on it ? does your ranger have 4wd ? Holey is a good brand along with edelbrock. They didn't know that a v-8 wasn't put into rangers and i love that ford had the cool 4.0 v6 as the biggest engine in rangers :)

Ill betcha 3 rust holes my 2.9 would beat it.

I have no experience with the 4.3 or the ZR2. So I would have to take your word for it.

The 4.0 SOHC was the most powerful factory engine put in the North American Ranger until the 2019 with the 2.3 Ecoboost.

3.0? Yes.

A V8 ranger? Maybe if it was only hitting 5 cylinders and had a brake dragging.
why do you think your 2.9 v6 would beat a 3.0 v6.

I wasn't talking about a custom v8 size engine in a ranger and i think v8's should be in ford full size trucks only and midsize dodge dakota trucks.

The 2.9 makes better low end torque and has a flatter torque curve then the 3.0, and they are about the same in HP.

Its generally accepted that the 2.9 is the peppier of the two engines.

why did ford make the 2.9 v6 and 3.0 v6 when they are only 0.1 difference in liter size. what does peppier mean

Here...for comparison....

87 2.9L/5sp

2000 3.0/5sp

Not a perfect comparison but gives you an idea

The 2.9 was born from the 2.8 and is apart of the colonge engine family (2.8/2.9/4.0/4.0SOHC, and a few others never used in an RBV)

The 3.0 was designed for the taurus originally, and replaced the 2.9 in 2wds i believe in 91, and 4wds after 92.

The 3.0 belongs to the vulcan engine family and im guessing replaced the 2.9 because honestly most ranger buyers went for the 4.0 anyways and the 2.9 was only used in the ranger and BII and the 3.0 was used in a bunch of shit

What do you like about the 2.9 and 2.8, i thought the 3.0 v6 was designed for the ranger originaly but i knew they used the 3.0 in the taurus.

I use to own a 93 mercury sable that belonged to my dads parents and that car had the 3.8 v6. i think they also might have put the 3.0 v6 in the sable too

Most ranger buyers love the 4.0 v6 either it be the older ohv or newer sohc.

Never owned a 2.8. But for all intents and purposes its basically a weaker 2.9 with a carburator.

I put over 300,000, at times very tough, miles on an 87 2.9. It never let me down, they are fun to drive, get decent mileage, and just kinda have a attitude to them...they are tempermental, quirky, but they have heart lol. Kinda like the little engine that could i guess.

Yes the 3.0 was used in the sable, and yes most guys like the 4.0 the best. The 2.9 has a much smaller, much more rabid, and loyal to the death fanbase.

I had an 89 2.9L Ranger STX for 13 years and liked it a lot. I did have to keep the rpm up to get decent power out of it when towing. Then I bought my current 2002 4.0L Ranger and found it had good power even at lower rpm. It was much better at towing and climbing hills. The 4.0L engine actually got better gas mileage when towing most of the time but could get lower gas mileage when climbing mountains. The 4.0L would also get better gas mileage around town until I put larger tires on it and now it gets about the same mileage as the 2.9L. Interstate driving gave about the same gas mileage for both.
