didn't realize I was that strong when beating on torsion bars

after beating on my rust belt bars for hours, one a lot more than the other, it appears I smashed one down over an inch!!!
sheese, no wonder my arm hurt.

sure there isnt a length difference between right & left sides? If you beat one down that much it should be mushroomed to hell.

I don't remember there being a length difference when I changed mine but I really wan't paying attention to that either. The new ones fit where they needed to fit and reached where they needed to reach. So, I just pulled the old ones and installed the new ones without comparing.
 
That is what I would have done too. Unless I just happened to lay them next to each other and saw the difference, I would have not noticed.
 
last week I purchased 2 new ones. took them out of the box and OH CRAP, the last 2 in the country were a mis-match!!
about the same time I removed, with difficulty, these old ones to find out they are also different.
kind of puzzling, but what the heck they are supposed to be that way.
I haven't crawled under to check, but I seem to remember the frame crossmember having a slight dog leg in it where the keys are mounted.
or at least something was offset when I was under there last year.
 
If they are different lengths then youd think they would be different diameters as well to achieve the same twist (spring rate). or am I overthinking it? Ive never messed with a torsion bar suspension. First one I ever saw was on a ‘78 plymouth volare.
 
I think with that small difference in lengths, there wouldn't be much difference in the force they exert. Besides, maybe thats6how they achieved the "Ranger lean" in those models. ;missingteeth;
 
Also think difference in composition, heat treating, and pre-stressing the metal can allow for difference in spring rates
