I found my front auto hubs lock in at once, rather by accident. I was under there looking around or something and turned the front axle by hand. I immediately heard the gears engaging and saw the front wheels turning.
In fact that's how I learned they don't simply engage when you flip the switch, that switch only engages the transfer case
