Is the 2010 4 cylinder engine an interference engine? When is the chain to be changed.

I dont believe timing chains are a normal maintence item

I see now that the timing chain is very well built and it stretches but is not prone to breaking. However, the tensioners do wear out so while I'm changing the tensioners, I might as well change the chain too as they come in the same relatively affordable kit.

Check this out. With Carparts.com, you get the guides, the chain, new sprockets for the cam shafts, new chain for the oil pump, new sprockets and guides for that and the tensioner all for $89. That's much less than the most basic service kits that I paid in the 80's.

my 2005 2.3 had 367,000 miles on it when pulled last spring.
everything inside the engine was original, including the rings from #1 cylinder that lost their tension which resulted in low compression and massive oil consumption.
the timing chain & guides had very little wear.

I read that the timing chain guides have a plastic component and they can wear out. I was a bicycle mechanic and bicycle chains and motorcycle chains have very short lifespans even if you clean them and re-oil them regularly. It seems that a chain bathed in engine oil lasts much longer. However, I did have an old Slant Six Dodge and the chain was very stretched after only 100,000 miles. I'm guessing chains and oils have improved since the 70's.
