Insurance

That's unbelievable. Why would anyone pay to insure a car they didn't own? You'd need a police report of an accident to file a claim anyway and they'd check the registration. I've never been asked for proof of ownership and the only car I've shown them was my Mustang. It's insured as a collector car based on an appraisal so they wanted a picture for the file.
Neither of my accident claims involved a police report.

IDK< maybe they want to make sure it's not stolen or something. I just give them the paperwork they ask me for.

I'm a little confused by your numbers too. Adding a vehicle has never reduced my total cost, just like Walt pointed out.

My Ranger is basically free.

I tried to drop it one winter it ended up being a couple bucks higher (like less than $5)

My insurance company wants pictures of the car, inside and out, odometer reading, a proof of ownership. Before Covid, they would physically want to see the car, in person.

Yeah thats nuts. Things have to be different state to state.. either regarding laws or even mabey just company policy.

A state with a higher population has more scumbags, meaning more attempts at any and all sort of crime.. that would make Maine one of the lowest risk states, so they'd be willing to have laws/policy's that are a little more lax.

I just had to redo my insurance after moving and they (Progressive) didn't ask for any proof of ownership for me. When my oldest son was in school, we insured his car even though he was the owner per the title and registration. Again, no proof of ownership was requested

Same - no proof of ownership has been requested. I suppose it's possible the insurance company could confirm things through the DMV though. One time I did get asked to stop by the insurance agency for them to look at the car, but that was over twenty years ago and has never happened since.

Neither of my accident claims involved a police report.

My last two were. One because it was blatantly obvious they didn't have insurance, even though the wreck was my fault. The other was when the 2011 got plowed into while I was sitting at a stop sign minding my own business by some old lady looking at something other than where she was going. Both were going to be expensive and insurance was going to be heavily involved.

The only time I was ever asked for anything “proving” I had a vehicle was when I had my ‘72 olds cutlass and I think they just wanted to see its condition. I put full wheel cover over the rally rims so it looked less “sporty” and they had no issue with it.
The biggest head scratcher involving insurance was when I had my 88 2.3 2wd ranger & a ‘77 305 nova. The premium breakdown had the ranger TWICE as much as the nova, absolutely rediculous! The nova was a V8, could go much faster, most likely weighed more & probably would cause more damage if you hit something. The last insurance company before I switched didnt even look at vin’s that well, I switched to american family when we got the new place because progressive wasn’t willing to bundle everything. Anyhow, after I had gave a.f. all the vehicle info I get a email from them saying the hhr vin didnt match up, I had gotten the # off a old insurance card, so progressive didnt have the right vin apparently and never noticed. We just have full coverage on the escape & liability on the ranger & hhr. I need to do something with the hhr, has wrist pin noise and its not been on the road in a couple of months. Im afraid it could grenade at any given moment.

Makes sense. Both of mine were single vehicle - one was a deer that jumped out of the brush right in front of me, the other was a giant rock in the middle of the road that I just didn't see clearly coming around a bend with the sun in my eyes. That one spelled an instant end for the old Subaru. Complete carnage underneath.

Nope. They ask for year/make/model, ask if it's modified, ask if it gets parked outside or in a garage, ask for money, print my cards, and thank me for my business.

It's been awhile since I needed to make a claim... but I dont even remember ever needing to prove ownership during claims processing. Relatively sure they just sent their guy out to take pictures, he asked where I wanted to send it to get fixed, and told me I was good to go.

For the longest time my fiances parents had her car on their policy, they definitely didn't own it. Insurance companies don't care, they just wanna get paid.

Wait. So you could walk into my friend's farm yard (where my Ranger is currently parked), take the truck, and insure MY truck that you STOLE, and nobody bats an eye? WTF is wrong with this picture?

You'd still be in possession of a stolen truck. And to top it off, it would be wildly obvious where it went if the police were able to search the insurance company records for the VIN number

Well, sure. But, it still doesn't make sense. And, any insurance company worth their salt SHOULD be warning that you risk being charged with insurance fraud.

As previously mentioned, no. I'd be charged with vehicle theft.. if I got caught.

It's not fraud to insure a vehicle you don't own...

Christ. The bank owns my truck for the next handful of years...

If you (hypothetically) stole a vehicle, why would you insure it? Because technically its the owner who is financially responsible.
Which brings me to another question- How can a insurance say that only certian drivers are covered? you’re insuring the car-not the driver. My daughter got a letter once from her insurance wanting my driver’s license # and information. I told her no, she eventually went to another company.
So- if a insurance company is only going to cover damage by a “approved “ driver, what happens if the car is stolen and damages happen?

When I got rearended in the '97 the guy driving the Jeep was the owners son, there was a little back and forth with Progressive (both they and I had Progressive) but like I said earlier, I had my $$ within like 3 days... I'd call them middle of the road in most respects, there's better and there's worse

I was wrong earlier when I said I had 5 cars with them... I think there's 6... 2 explorers, 2 Rangers, an F350 and a Camry...
