Have you met a dealer that admits they mark their cars up

Has anyone ever gotten a salesman to admit that some BS fees are simply markup? I got an out the door price for a new tundra and the dealer added 1000 for floormats and tint. The factory added 600 toyo guard. Here was the conversation.

-what’s this $1000?
—Toyota is shipping without floormats so it doesn’t hold up production. We add those amd also tint the windows.
-that must be nice tint. What brand?
—don’t know
-well I always put in my own mats I don’t want those. Can you take off that add on
—no
-so it’s markup?
—no it’s for mats and tint (circular conversation went nowhere)
-what about Toyo guard, that’s an expensive two oil changes
—it’s 4 tire rotations too.
-…
—you get roadside assistance and rental reimbursement too
-will I need that? are the new tundras still breaking down?
—no you won’t need it
-take it off
—no
-so it’s markup
—no

I have no problem with dealers marking stuff up. I would. I hate being lied to tho. I had another one where the salesman tried reallllllly hard to convince me that the $5000 markup wasn’t just markup. I mean… I’ll pay it if I want it bad enough. I won’t fund your attempted shmoozing tho.

Dealers have always "fees, markups". This is why it is best to order a vehicle how you want it so they can't add any markups. Local dealers here will add on the flashing 3rd brake light for 700ish, the part cost 5.00 and .2 hr to install.

Some vehicles don't come with floor mats or other small things, mainly because they are either ordered that way or they are adding extra protection floor mats like weathertech mats.

Dealers have always added things to make more money, it's how they make extra money. The biggest scam (if you want to call it that) is extended warranty. Average new vehcile warranty is 5 yr/50,000 mi, average how long people own a new vehicle has gone up to 8 1/2 years. What people don't know is the extended warranty is generally a drivetrain warranty (the cheapest) up to the "best" warranty covering electrical items, regardless factory drivetrain warranties go up to 10/100,000.

They will sell the customer on, "what if the computer fails?" Can it happen, of course. Possibility, slim to none. But do you want to pay for a new computer?

This is where a leased vehicle is popular with older people.

I hate those flashing TBLs.

When we bought the Maverick for my wife, they told us up front that there was markup because it is a 'high demand vehicle.' I think it was $1500. Sadly, they are right and if we don't pay it, there's someone waiting in the wings who would, so it flies. Oh well, it brings a big smile to my wife's face and makes her happy so it's worth it. And at least they were honest and up front about it, before we even committed a deposit.

Leasing a vehicle is only advantageous to individuals who have a business & can write off the expenses on their yearly tax returns.

For an individual to lease a vehicle for just personal use is simply throwing money away, you are paying for something that you never own. Lease is a glorified word for Rent. When the lease matures one has 2 options 1. turn the vehicle in which leaves you with no vehicle or 2. buy out the remainder of the lease which leaves the purchaser usually ending up paying out more than what the vehicle is really worth on paper.

As a senior a lease is a non-starter.

On the matter of dealer mark-ups....turn around & walk away from the salesman & keep your money in your pocket....:)

My dad got an extended warranty for his used Prius. It paid for itself because… you won’t believe it… his cup holder broke. It was the spring loaded, dash mounted, passenger cup holder. Whole dash had to come out to fix it. Granted he probably just wouldn’t have paid to fix it if it didn’t have that warranty.

Oh man… myself and my dad got told to leave a dealer years ago or we were going to be escorted off the premises by police. No joke. Why? Because we called them out on their lies in the show room.

This was about 22 years ago, we went to the dealer because I was looking for a truck and they were advertising Rangers for $99 over dealer invoice. Bear in mind this was back when KBB would post copies of actual dealer invoices (really remember this point, it will be important in a minute). So we go in and tell the salesman why we are there and before we can give any information on what exactly we want, he announces that he has the “perfect“ truck for us and drags us out on the lot. Directly to a bright red stepside extended cab 4.0 automatic 4x4 with every option you could get. No. That’s not at all going to work. So he drags us to another one, a little less fancy but still not what I was after. So he starts to drag us to another and it was ok, hold up here fella. You aren’t at all listening. I’m after a 6 cylinder manual transmission 2wd with a fleetside bed in blue, black, silver grey or I would consider green. Preferably regular cab. So he finally takes us to one that meets that, only to find that I don’t fit well in a regular cab.

So that brings us to an extended cab. But he says they don’t have what I’m looking for there. I asked about a couple ones that I could see on the lot that might fit the bill but he doesn’t want to talk about those. Fine. What do you have in used? Well, one Ranger but it wasn’t what I was after either. So then they said they had a newly traded in F-150 that they would want $2,500 for as-is and $5,500 after it was run through the detail shop. It was a 1983 with not a solid body panel on it, split seat, broken dash, and 200k+ miles. Yeah, no. Well, we do have this one new Ranger that might work. Here’s the invoice to show you, we are only charging $99 over invoice. Except it was about 3 grand over the price of an invoice that I had seen for a 4x4 with similar options and the “invoice“ the dealer put in front of us was obviously whited out and a new number typed in. We called them out on it. Then they said they could get what I wanted from another dealer but charge me a grand to drive it in and that was when a big wig came over and said it was time for us to leave or they were calling the police.

You act like renting a truck is a bad thing. I get a brand new truck, drive it for 2-3 years, toss the keys to the salesman and say “give me another one”. I never replace tires or brakes. I don’t worry about the expensive modules that “no one but the dealer can replace”.
I work on 2010+ Fords 5 days a week... I don’t want to work on one for free on Saturday or Sunday. I’m free to spend my weekends doing whatever I want with my family.
The only thing in my life that I’ll never get more of is time... I’d rather spend it with my daughter, than spend it working on my daily driver.

Leasing worked ok for me for a while. My commute was 30 miles each way, 4 days a week or more and my wife had a lot of Dr appointments out of town. So we traveled a good bit. So I joined the employee lease program here at BMW. It was about the same as I would pay for loan payments on a new car of a different brand. Taxes, registration, insurance and all maintenance were covered in the payments. Didn't have to worry about miles. Every time I picked up my new lease car, I ordered the next one. About the time I was at the mileage they wanted on the car, my next car was prepped and ready for the swap. It was a sweet deal for the most part. I drove about 7 of those things. A new BMW every 6-9 months. I did get spoiled during that time.

We’re they wanting used cars? Were you a test subject?

They would go to auction and get sold. I believe they were called "program cars". Basically, it gets a certain volume of excellent condition used cars out there in the retail world. All maintenance and repairs on these cars were done here at the plant in a place called the performance center. All BMW certified mechanics, everything done as perfectly as possible. The performance center is also the location they use for driving schools, special events and for customers to pick up their new cars.

You can order a new BMW car or motorcycle and arrange to pick it up here. You get special training on how to use the vehicle and all it's features, hands-on driving on the course and a plant tour.

and its awesome!!!

i took the tour of the plant about 10 years ago. i would love to work there.

i tried to slip in on a tour last time i was in that neck of the woods but the lead times was like 5 or 6 weeks long so i had to pass. they had rearranged the museum area and the store is a lot smaller than it used to be but i still had to buy some cool bmw stuff

I'm not *acting* at all, I'm stating. Would you rather rent the place where you live (putting the money into someone elses pocket to enjoy) instead of owning it yourself?...leasing works on the same principle, renting is throwing money away. You basically said it yourself you keep paying for a replacement vehicle that you will never own.

I have gone back and forth on this.

By the time a guy pays off a $50-70k+ pickup it probably about time to trade it off anyway.

So either way it is constant payments. One way has payments with no repairs.

So I did the right thing and bought a used truck with no warranty last Friday. :icon_twisted:

Don't worry. Someone will call you soon about that warranty.
