Hello,

Does anyone know if its possible to change from a standard bed to the step side bed on a 99? Will I need to do any kind of modifications to it? Any input is appreciated, thanks very much!!

You'll need a stepside bumper as well

Step side bumper and a filler neck for that style of bed. The rest is plug and play. Just make sure the bed is from a ‘98+ Ranger.

Any bed from a 93 to 11 will work, as long as you have a 6' bed on there now. you may need to retain your taillight harness and tail lights or swapout a flasher if y ou get newer than 99 or older than 99. somewhere in that year range the tails went to a two bulb system instead of a 3 bulb system. Someone else might be able to shed more light on that.

Also the above comment on swapping the bumper and filler neck is true as well, but the 98 and older had a different style of filler neck, so youmay need a new filler neck. anything newer than99 should be ok on that part

I think the stepside is only available from '93 to '04; must be '6 box (most common one on regular cabs, only one on factory SuperCabs).

You want to retain your tail light harness and tail lights (for reference '93-'99, '00 and '01-04 are the break points) '93-99 tail lights are amber turn top, brake/running middle and white reverse bottom; '00 are red turn or brake/running top & middle and white reverse bottom. '01 to 04 are white reverse top, red turn or brake/running middle and bottom. @RonD made me triple check myself.

You need filler neck, and tailgate for the stepside; correct bumper makes it look right but not absolutely necessary.

I did it a couple weekends back on my '99 as I found a stepside box with zero rust. (someone had already got the tailgate). Spray the threads on the box bolts ahead of time and be prepared to break a couple. (Eat your Wheaties before tackling)

@19Walt93 ; The box I installed has a step built into the side :stirthepot:

You'll have better luck finding a flare side box for a Ranger, Ford never put a step side on them.

Another heads up

1999 was last year for separate turn bulbs in tail lights, called a 3 wire system
In 2000 and up Rangers got 2 wire system brake/turn combined

So if you get a 2000+ step side then you will need to swap lenses and rear bed wiring from your 1999
1993-1999 would be plug and play

That's an important distinction to you?

Yes, Ford made Flareside Rangers and some called Splashes. The old bodies from the 70's and before with the metal step mounted down by the bottom of the fender might have been called step sides, I'm not sure. My Traction Lok isn't a Posi, either. A Posi is the rear end that Chevy guys with some power kept breaking before they installed the 9 inch.

Traction less....that describes a traction lol.
