My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
I really gotta baby my shifts to keep it from grinding gears. I suspect worn synchros, am I on the right track?

Also I may have used the wrong ATF in the last flush, which I vaguely recall was type F. Am I screwed?

I forgot the technical name of mine, but its the common 5 speed manual they attach to the 4.0 OHV...

Drain the type F, dump some lucas in with the ATF, and try again.

But yes you may have eaten a syncro.

Its a M5OD btw. Lol.

Ford has changed the recommended fluid in the M5OD so many times over the years that it’s not worth counting. If they can keep changing which fluid you’re supposed to use in the older ones, you pretty much can’t screw it up... as long as you put ATF in it.

Yes my problem is the conflicting search results of recommended fluid. I have a bunch of synthetic dex/Merc, will try with some Lucas. Might hit up my transmission shop owner buddy.

try reving the engine with trans in neutral (clutch out) between shifts, my 93 I had to do that when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Upshifts were fine. As long as you didn’t use gear oil you should be ok. I run pennzoil syncromesh fluid in mine with no problems.

Current spec for that trans is going to be mercon V.

Try matching your revs when you shift, see if it helps the grinding.

Yea I think I'm gonna go mercon V. Actually my downshifts are fine, it's the upshifts thats the problems. Actually both ways it's goes through the gears fine, just grinds it if I shift not super slow and easy.

Is it possible you've got a dragging pilot bearing or hydraulic issue?

If all gears are grinding I would suspect something like fastpakr said. It's not uncommon to lose a synchro or two but all of them at once would be really rare.

5w30 engine oil is worth a try too. It was almost a miracle cure in one of mine that was a little weird going into 2nd gear.

Hydraulic feels fine. Engagement is good. Pilot bearing might be something. I didn't consider that.

Well everything but 5th. 3rd ain't so bad either...2nd is the worst, followed by 4th.

You could be having slave or master cylinder issues causing your problem. I was having shifting issues with mine before the slave decided to take a dump. I ended up getting a complete, bench bled kit with the master and slave cylinder in the kit. It solved my shifting issues after I changed them out.

I do have a brand new pre bled unit from a previous parts toss...if I can find it I will swap it lol

I have used Pennzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid in my M5OD's, the shifting is way smoother than Mercon V.
