Can anyone please tell me if a 1996 forge ranger extended cab driver door will fit a 1997 Ford ranger xlt ?

Welcome to the club.

The cabs from 93 thru 97 are the same making the doors the same in those years. 93-94 the interior door panels and latch are different. The latch does not have the interior light switch built into it like the 95-97 does but the latches are able to be swapped along with the internal wiring for the interior light.

In '95 the Rangers had an interior refresh so 95-97 are a direct Bolt on swap for your application without the need to swap any parts.

What? door latches are lit up? Never saw that in my 97.,.. and I got the Extra Lot of Trouble package too... (XLT)

basically this is pretty much true. the doors from 98 to 11 are also the same, but may have some variances in the interior trim and the mirrors were changed in 2007 I think.

The interior light switch is located in the door latch. 93-94 uses a door jam pressure switch to turn the interior lights on instead. They are located in the A pillar.

ahhh that is what you are talking about, I thought it was an actual illuminated door handle. the interior light switch is the one that I have to hit up with a can of wd 40 every so often to keep my "door is ajar" light off lol

Yep, you can pick and choose things... The getter is the door locks are different size over the years, I bought my Red/Burgandy '97 with a white drivers door which wasn't gonna work for me (plus somehow they didn't reinstall a door panel? WTF), found a '94 in the junkyard that was close in color and put that in, grabbed the latch from the newer door that was on it, mixmatched the inside hardware enough to fit since the plastic clip setup is different between the two. The real getter was the door lock cylinder, I didn't have one that was keyed right so I had to do some custom locksmithing... Unfortunately those are sealed units unlike what's on my '90 so it's not pretty...

If anyone is curious enough to need to do this, you have to gently pry the outer trim off, it's just crimped on. After that, stick your key in and mark it at the depth it goes in. From what I remember it wasn't too hard to get it apart from there, but I do remember I didn't get the key depth correct on the first try or two. I was only able to get 3 of the pins to work out of 5 or 6, but it's close enough, it's just a hooptie that I don't leave anything in if I go anywhere sketchy...

Thank y’all I greatly appreciate it!!!!!!!!! And to my fellow veterans thank you for your service!!
