I bought this little Bronco II several years ago as a project. Body & Interior are in great shape.... but it runs terribly, it definately needs some tender loving care mechanically. I just recently started driving it, terrible gas mileage, no power, poor acceleration... definitely needs a rebuild. Last week it wouldn't start... no spark, the distributor was shot. No big deal, fortunately, I work for Napa. I replaced the distributor, no problem. Got lucky and it went right in the first try. However, when I tried to set the timing I ran into a bit of a problem. The "Spout Connector" has no effect on the timing. With or with the spout connector plugged in the timing remains the same. I tried jumping the connector, the same thing... the spout connector does not affect the timing at all. There is 6.4 - 7.8 volts at the hot side of the spout connection, the voltage increases slightly when I increase the rpm, but the timing does not advance or change with or without the spout connector plugged in, or when I increase the engine RPM. Anyone have any ideas on how or what I should do to correct this problem? I have all the original Ford Shop & emissions manuals, a Chitons and Haynes manual also... I'm an experienced mechanic, 30+ years working in the boating industry as a mechanic, 10+ years in the automotive parts business (3 years in a Ford Parts Dept). I'm stumped,

HELP?!?!?!?

Me, again... New here, and not quite sure if this is the best place to leave a post introducing myself AND asking for advice also??? suggestions and advice are always welcome.

Hey B4B, welcome to TRS. That sir is a nice looking ride. I can't help you much with it, but there are some great folks here who most certainly can, although it might be a bit slow this being a major holiday.
Welcome, and happy Thanksgiving :)

Thanks for the reply, and the welcome... not in any hurry, but need to get the Ol' girl running halfway decent soon. It's my "daily driver" while I'm doing the top end of my 2004 Grand Cherokee 4.0L. The Bronco runs but I'm only getting 7 mpg out of it right now. 20-mile round trip commute to work... uugggg!!

Welcome. Nice Bronco II!

I think you might be looking at some vacuum, ignition, emissions problem. Do you have a vacuum gauge?

First off what year is the thing?

Big difference in what could be causeing these issues if its a 2.8 or 2.9.

Im going to guess either a TFI issue or ECM.

I'll give you tree fiddy for it....

2.8 or 2.9?

If 2.9:
Watch timing through rpm range with a light. See if it moves. If not, either tfi, bad wire, or capacitor on ecm border took a sh*t. Did you replace hall sensor when you put the distributor in?

Nice B2!

1986 2.9L...New "rebuilt distributor... when I pulled the spout connector to time the dang thing the timing doesn't change. Timing remains where ever I set it. Doesn't effect timing if spout connector is plugged in or disconnected. Timing does not advance either.

I hate to mention this Bits, but "lucky and it went right in the first try" on a distributor could still be 180 :/

It runs, distributor is in the correct position. the problem I'm having is when I try to set the timing... the timing does not change with the spout connector plugged in or disconnected. timing stays where I set it. No timing advance when you increase engine rpm, spout connector has no effect on engine timing.

New, rebuilt distributor.. could be defective. I work for Napa, I could replace it, again.
