looking for ideas: cap or tent?

It's apples vs pears .

Defining questions ;

Do you want to use your truck to haul your gear to the campsite ? Or prefer to camp IN the truck ?

Would having a lockable enclosed space on your truck be advantage, disadvantage, or nuetral for you the other 98% of the time you aren't camping ?

If you have a helper just standing there with their hands in their pockets , two people make it even easier to install/ remove aluminium cap . But it is absolutely possible by one person . Back in the day , I worked at an RV dealer, and one of my duties was installing the caps , and we routinely did it with one person .

If you contemplate ever removing and reinstalling , use clamps , not drill & bolt .

Purpose built clamps for capd are better than generic C clamps .

Aluminum roofs are noisy in the rain . But it doesn't kill you, or cause cancer , so get over it , it's * Camping * not the Holiday Inn . The point of aluminum caps is that they are lightweight , simple, and economical , don't undermine it's strengths just because of hearing the occasional raindrop. You'd be hearing the rain in a tent also .

Dunno about a topper but as long as you stay dry there is nothing better than sleeping in a tent in the rain.

It depends on the situation and tour setup. I prefer a cap over a bed tent. The cap doesn’t have to be broke down or setup every time you drive somewhere.

Tent = 200 bucks, camper shell = 2,000 bucks.

You find me a decent used cap for 100 bucks and ill buy you a case of beer and a hermit crab.

You got a 6' or 7' bed Dirtman?

Give me a little while, I waiting for a buddy to get back to me about the cap off the Ranger he got rid of.

How does this sound?
I found you a white, fiberglass cap off an '02 Ranger w/ a 6' bed. Paint is in good shape. Rear window shocks functioned last year (last time it was on the truck). No key to the lock. He only has 3 clamps.
$200 (It's just in his way, I can probably get him to drop that to $150.)

Pm me details.

K thanks. I assume its local?
