1990 ranger 4.0 swap issues.

I purchased the truck with the swap done but the previous owner never got the swap running. He told me he has only about 7 volts to fuel pump. When he turns the key nothing happens. The motor will turn over if you jump the seloniod posts it will turn over but doesn’t have spark. Just wondering if there is any one thing I should look at or if I have a series of issues. Any help is good. Thanks in advance!

What year was the donor truck and what engine was in the truck before? Did he swap the whole engine bay harness and computer? I have the wiring diagrams for most years/engines that I can post.

1990 is the year of the body and chassis I assume
Look for the computer "he used", does it have 60 wire connector(1990-1994 4.0l) or 104 wire connector (1995-2000 4.0l)
1990-1994 4.0l used separate spark module, EDIS-6

104 wire could be 4.0l SOHC(2001-2011), this engine would have "4.0l SOHC" on the engine cover


And no, there is no one thing
The starter motor activation system has no connection to the computer and/or spark system in any year, except they both use battery power to start working

the body and chassis is 1990. as soon as I know what year the motor was I will look into those

The motor is a 1991 and the chassis is a 1990. if u have the diagrams that would be great!

First two digits are the year
E9 = 1989
F0 = 1990
F1 = 1991
F2 = 1992
ECT up to F8

3rd digit should be 7 for Ranger, i.e. F17 = 1991 Ranger computer

Well we are off to a good start my Ecu matches what the guy told me good year.

I have been looking it over and comparing to the diagrams above. I have found that there is a selonoid on the passenger side of the engine bay that if you jump with a screen driver the motor cranks over. if you jump the selonoid on the start nothing happens it just arks. still nothing happens when you turn the key. just wondering why that other solenoid is there.

Starter RELAY may be what you are talking about

It will have the larger Battery positive cable hooked to one larger post, and that post will also have several other wires on it, its the power distribution point for the vehicle.

Then there will be another larger post with just one cable that runs to starter motor

Then a smaller Post with an "S" label, this "S" post activates this relay, the wire on this post comes from the ignition switch VIA the "neutral switch", the "neutral switch" on a manual trans is the Clutch Pedal switch, it passes 12v from the ignition switch(in START position) to the "S" post when clutch pedal is down all the way

If you jumper 12v to the "S" post then starter should activate, even IN GEAR so be careful

You are correct. I can’t seem to get that to bridge. As in get power from one terminal to the other.

If you jumper 12v from battery post to "S" post and starter activates then the Relay is OK, if it doesn't activate then replace relay

If it does activate, then problem is either Neutral switch or ignition switch(under steering column, not key switch)
Neutral switch is more likely in 1990/1 because people liked to jumper them and the added wires would come off, lol

If you replace the relay then makes sure ALL the wires on the "battery post" stay on the battery post side of the relay
