Maintain it dammit!
Been thinking about headers for my 4.0 OHV - possible to install 2 into 2 in California legally? 2 into 2 overkill?

Per California law - Exhaust systems can’t be modified in a way that increases or amplifies the amount of sound that the vehicle makes beyond that produced by factory equipment.

So unless you find magical headers and a dual exhaust system that doesn't increase the sound... No.

Think I might have answered my own question - doubtful that 2 into 2 will do anything of value as I want to preserve the mid range and not mess with backpressure- might just invest in a catback system as my oem exhaust on this '94 is getting old - any recommendations that work well for the '93 4.0 OHV ? Thanks!

this is incorrect.

CA. V.C. 27151 No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5

section 27150 says vehicles with a gvw of 6000 pounds or less shall not exceed 95 dB

Please write to your state legislators urging them to succeed from the United States. Then move literally anywhere else on earth. That's your best option for getting a better exhaust system...

ive stock manifolds, no cats, and a short 10 series muffler(not a fan of this one at all, want to go back to magnaflow) on my 4.0 and knock on wood havent been messed with in the 1.5 years its been completed.

the guy who dyno tuned my truck told me hes gotten better results from 4.0 trucks with stock manifolds over headers but, if you want em you can score some jba short tube headers, keep your cats, and then pick any muffler you want for it. i believe factory tubing after the cats was 2.5"? so a nice magnaflow muffler would help ya out.

Nothing illegal in dual exhausts in any state, it just has to meet emissions(Cats) and noise standards.

They measure DB at 20" from tail pipe, 95bd is the limit allowed
Measured at about 3,500-4,000RPM, depends on the engine

You do need compliance labels and numbers to show any new exhaust parts meet Calif standards

I agree with the overall sentiment, but this is not the word you want.
Yeah. Maybe we should try " secede".

This message composed solely of recycled electrons. Go green!

Me no speak the engoish good.

The exhaust noise law may be in the books but it is rarely enforced. Dual exhaust will do nothing to improve performance of a 4.0 Ranger. It certainly has a great look to it but will most likely reduce low to mid range torque. The OHV 4.0 engine's greatest performance feature is; low end to mid range torque. Headers typically improve higher rpm horsepower at the sacrifice of torque. The OHV 4.0 does not flow enough to gain any high rpm hp so you end up just losing torque with no other gain.

I agree, many people should leave CA and give me more room to enjoy it. I will recommend PA to everyone I see and tell them how great it is there.

That is a good recommendation about seceding. Then the Feds could not steal our money to give to the states that can't support themselves.

I've had aftermarket exhaust on every truck I've owned; from single chambers w/ turn downs to Borla ProXS and have never been cited (by law enforcement or smog inspectors). I've never displayed the CARB compliant sticker either. As long as you don't mess w/ the cats, more than likely you'll be ok.

No exhaust changes unless it's CARB approved, but it's okay to shit on the sidewalk and steal up to $900 worth of stuff.
