Do these piggyback/plug in chips really give any noticiable performance?

Im happy with my 97 460, but it could be fun to have some more oomph.

Just curious more then anything. Yay or nay?

No.

There are two types of vehicles that aftermarket chips make a noticeable difference with. Both are turbocharged. Diesels and direct-injected gasoline.

You've got an old-school motor that is what it is. You want more horsepower, you have to accept more rpm. You want a truck motor that has the most grunt at the point where you let the clutch up--you don't want that.

The only thing I don't like about my Toyota's 4.0 is that although the peak torque numbers are much higher than the motor in my destroyed Ranger 4.0---the Ranger made it's beans down where you let the clutch pedal up. I would give up 80hp and 50ft# going to the Ranger motor, but would do that in a second as all the extra numbers are up in a range I can't use them. The pushrod Ranger 4.0 is a much better truck motor than the DOHC, VVT Toyota 4.0. No contest.

It's the characteristics of the motor that matter. That old 460 is a truck motor.

But it didn't start that way. You can make a lot of power, but you have to change it into a different type of motor. Something a little chip can't do. And something that won't suit a truck.

rollmaster timing set and a tweecer or 1/4 horse with long tubes and trip over there to php for some dyno time will get you some fawkin oomph out of that lazy slug.

If it’s an automatic it will improve shifting. Otherwise there isn’t much a tuner can do to a engine just playing with fuel and timing.

I forgot about that. A truck that late will have the retarded cam timing built into the set?

they are the better of the breed in that regard...supposed to be straight up.


but a 2 deg bump which you can do with the dizzy technically changes things.

full tune from there to deal with the trans shift points and an actual custom cam was night and day on several vehicles i got to experience. certainly more then i thought possible.

I don't know about that. I've got a buddy with an injected 460-turned-521 warmed up to about 500 hp in an 94 F-250 that'll put the hurt on modern diesel pickups. It's plenty suited a truck. If you're not careful that clutch pedal, it's real easy to crack your noggin on the rear glass.

My daughter got her permit today and cracked my head on the glass in our Focus.

A '94 F250 with a 521 isn't going to impress me at all. And it's not going to put a hurt on a modern diesel. That's dreaming.
