Starting/firing problems with grinding/weird noises!

Got the transmission out, took off the clutch and took out the slave cylinder. The little inspection window cover thing was laying loose under the slave cylinder and the clutch looks pretty bad. I'm hoping it is somehow just the clutch hanging up making that grinding noise!

Those inspection covers aren't really held in there too well...at least mine wasn't.

Are you replacing the clutch/slave/pilot bearing all at once? It might be only one thing but it''s really a carp shoot to do just one thing and not all three while you got it in pieces...

Yes sir, that's the plan anyway! Planning on ordering the clutch and all from Rock Auto, unless yall have a better place or reccomendation. If I could find an all in one kit, that would be even better. The pilot bearing looks/seems like it's fine but while I'm at it may as well do that too, be kinda dumb I think not to.

Be sure and replace the rear main seal in the engine while you have the flywheel off in case you hadnt planned on it. You are replacing the flywheel?

I would do an inspection of the rear main seal before recommending replacement. They can last 500,000 miles without leaking, tho I haven't gone that far. Half on a Vulcan, and it doesn't leak.
If it is seeping, and there's a trail 'washed' down the backside of the pan, then definitely do the seal. If it is dry, you have more chance to make it leak by disturbing it. Getting one in place is not 'delicate' but you do have to be careful, get it in straight, and get it to slide over the crankshaft surface without popping the spring.
I may just be lazy, but I wouldn't do one unless it was needed.

The seal is pretty loose, it was flopping all in my way while I was trying to get some of the bolts out. So I am guessing it may be a good idea to replace it as well? I will try to get some pictures uploaded this evening. At least I'm thinking this is the seal... it's basically a real thin aluminum plate? Or is this just a spacer? (I really gotta get pictures lol)

I'm not planning on replacing the flywheel, it looks to be fine. But if they are cheap enough I may go ahead.

Thanks yall!

**update**
With some help I got the transmission back in, so now I have a new clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, and slave cylinder. Still on start, hear grinding then it gets real bad and chokes itself out. It was run if I feather the gas, but still with a grinding noise. Soon as I let off the gas, it grinds to a chunking halt and dies. I'm at my wite end... anyone have any good ideas or am I looking at a motor rebuild or something? =/

****SOLVED!!!!!!!!!****

All this time it was one freaking wire. Someone put a solenoid on wrong and hooked the alternator ground wire to the positive post. That was shorting it out just enough to keep throwing the starter back in causing it to grind! Hope this may help someone else out.

Good to hear you figured it out...and thank you for the update!

Oh me too lol I was about to the point where I wanted to chunk it. But no problem, I hope it helps someone else out one day.
